Condors Announce Preseason Showdown
June 12, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. â The Bakersfield Condors Professional Hockey Club of the ECHL have announced a pair of preseason games against one of their Western Division rivals, the Las Vegas Wranglers. The first game will be on Friday, October 10th at the brand new Orleans Arena in Las Vegas at 7:05pm. On Saturday, October 11th, the teams will meet at Centennial Garden in Bakersfield at 7:00pm.
The Wranglers are playing in their first season of operation, and in the match against the Condors on the 10th they will christen their new hockey rink. Meanwhile, the Condors begin their 6th season, and will be preparing for their official season opener on home ice on Friday, October 17th against the Fresno Falcons.
"The preseason games will be a great test," said Head Coach Paul Kelly. "It's good for me and (Associate Coach) Marty Raymond to get a look at the team and make some decisions on the roster. It's always helpful to get a look at the players in a game situation.
The first step in the construction of a roster is the protected list, which has already been submitted to the ECHL office. All teams were allowed to protect a maximum of 20 players from their final roster, which the Condors did.
Under ECHL and Professional Hockey Player Association (PHPA) rules, the Condors must make a qualifying offer to each player on the protected list by July 1st. If not, that player may sign with any other club, as Bakersfield would no longer hold their playing rights. Qualifying offers differ based on the individual player's status (veteran or non-veteran).
