Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

HARLINGEN - Starting pitcher Alexander Concepcion pitched a near-complete game, overpowering the San Angelo Colts in helping the WhiteWings defeat the Colts 5-2.

Concepcion pitched 8.2 innings, giving up six hits and allowing just two runs. Through 4.2 innings, Concepcion held the Colts without a hit.

With his performance, Concepcion moves to 6-3 on the year while his ERA drops to 5.57.

For the WhiteWings (37-26), it's their sixth win in a row as they move 11 games above .500 and draw within two games behind first-place San Angelo (38-23).

With Concepcion not allowing a hit early on, the WhiteWings were able to get on the board after three scoreless innings from San Angelo starting pitcher Logan Williamson. The WhiteWings got through to Williamson in the fourth inning, racing out to a 5-0 lead. Antonio DeJesus, David Peralta and Leivi Ventura recorded three consecutive doubles to start the inning, which brought two runs home to make the score 2-0 WhiteWings. An RBI single from Wilmer Pino made the score 3-0, but Alexis Hernandez's homerun, his second with the WhiteWings in as many days, opened things up as the 'Wings staked a 5-0 advantage.

The big five-run fourth inning was all the WhiteWings needed to record the win.

By the sixth inning, Concepcion surrendered just his second hit of the day, a homerun to Ronnie Gaines, which cut the 'Wings lead to 5-1.

Entering the ninth inning, trying to record a complete game, Concepcion was pulled with two outs following an RBI single from Vic Ferrante.

Edgar Martinez came on in a save situation to record the final out and his league-leading 19th save.

The WhiteWings close out their series in a doubleheader against San Angelo, starting at 5:05 PM. Eric Blackwell (6-2, 2.95 ERA) and newcomer David Cross are expected to start.
