Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
A Sunday doubleheader was a day dominated by excellent Kannapolis Intimidators pitching as the Intimidators used only two pitchers the entire day, and swept the doubleheader from the Lakewood BlueClaws 4-1 and 4-0. Both Justin Collop and Andre Rienzo had complete games, the first two complete games of the season.
In the first game of the afternoon, Justin Collop scattered six hits while striking out seven and walking no one over a seven-inning performance where the only run he allowed came in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs. Collop (6-7) has now pitched seven or more innings in his last four starts.
The Intimidators (9-15) got on the board in the first inning off Colby Shreve (5-5), who went five innings, with a double from Kyle Colligan and he scored on two wild pitches. In the third, the Intimidators added two runs as Kevin Dubler hit his first home run of the season and Daniel Wagner singled, stole a base and scored on another wild pitch to make it 3-0. The Intimidators notched their fourth run of the day on Ryan Hamme's second home run in the fourth in the game one victory.
Game two was more of the same for the Intimidators as it was Andre Rienzo who pitched a complete game, and also nabbed the shutout, the ninth complete game shutout in the South Atlantic League this season nearly upstaging the spectacular performance put in by Collop in game one.
Rienzo (2-4) allowed just four hits, with five strikeouts and two walks as only two batters reached second base on him and he didn't allow a runner to get to third in what was his second straight shutout outing this season. Rienzo has 15 straight shutout innings over his last three starts, two wins.
Again it was in the first that the Intimidators got on the board first as Tyler Saladino walked and was brought home on an Ian Gac infield single. In the third, the Intimidators took a 2-0 lead as Nick Ciolli beat out a potential double-play ball which kept the inning alive to score Saladino from third. Finally, in the fourth, Hamme led off with a single, stole second, was moved to third on a single by Miguel Gonzalez and scored on a single by Juan Silverio. Gonzalez then scored on a sacrifice fly from Wagner.
In total, two pitchers went 14 innings, allowed ten hits, two walks, 12 strikeouts and allowed just one run in today's double header sweep, the first of the season. The Intimidators also broke an 0-for-13 streak in the game following a win and scored back-to-back wins for the first time since May 30th. Even still, the BlueClaws (15-8) left town one to the good with a 3-2 series win.
The Intimidators have an off day on Monday and will begin a four-game series with the Greenville Drive at Flour Field. Ryan Buch will make his second start back with the club at 7:00 pm.
