Commonwealth Cup Rivalry Returns

Worcester, MA -- For the second straight season the Worcester Tornadoes will battle it out with Bay State rivals Brockton Rox and North Shore Spirit in the Commonwealth Cup Series - a season-long competition pitting the three Massachusetts teams in the Can-Am League in a head-to-head competition for state supremacy.

Worcester and North Shore play 26 games (12 vs. Brockton, 14 vs. each other), while Brockton will play 24 games in the series this year (12 vs. North Shore and Worcester). The team with the highest winning percentage in the series will be crowned the Commonwealth Cup champion.

The Tornadoes have already jumped out to an early lead in the chase for the Commonwealth Cup. Worcester swept a four-game series from the North Shore Spirit and have won four of their seven head-to-head matchups with the Brockton Rox. The Tornadoes 8-3 record and .727 winning percentage places them 3 games ahead of Brockton (3-4, .429) and 4.5 games in front of North Shore (0-4, .000), one-third of the way through the season.

The Tornadoes entered the 2007 campaign with an 11-16 all-time record against Brockton (5-8 in 2006) and a 10-18 mark against North Shore (3-11 in 2006). The North Shore Spirit took home the cup last season after compiling a combined 18-8 record vs. Brockton and Worcester. Brockton finished in second place with a 13-11 record, while Worcester placed third with an 8-19 record.

Massachusetts teams have won two of the past four CanAm League championships -Worcester in 2005 and Brockton in 2003.
