Comets Announce 2006 Schedule

HOUSTON - The Houston Comets and reigning WNBA MVP Sheryl Swoopes will tip off the 2006 regular season on Sunday, May 21 at 5:00 p.m. against the San Antonio Silver Stars at Toyota Center. The game was announced today by the WNBA as part of the 2006 league schedule. The Comets will then travel to Seattle for a match up with the Storm on May 23, which will air on ESPN2. Overall this season, the Comets will be featured in four nationally televised games, with three contests on ESPN2 and one on ABC.

"I am really excited to be starting our 10th season in front of our fans at Toyota Center," said Comets Head Coach and General Manager Van Chancellor. "We are looking forward to a great season and picking up where we left off last year."

In its 10th Anniversary season, the WNBA will showcase 14 teams in 2006, including the WNBA's newest franchise, the Chicago Sky, while continuing the 34-game schedule (17 home and 17 away). Overall, Houston will play each Western Conference opponent three or four times and face each Eastern Conference opponent two times.

Highlighting Houston's 17-game home slate will be seven weekend games, including six Sunday contests starting at 5:00 p.m. In addition, the Comets will host one afternoon weekday game on Thursday, June 29 vs. the Washington Mystics at 12:00 p.m.

Other highlights on Houston's home schedule include a meeting with 2005 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Tamika Catchings and the Indiana Fever on May 31, as well as a pair of visits by Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury on July 27 and August 10. Finals MVP Yolanda Griffith and the defending WNBA Champion Sacramento Monarchs are also scheduled to make two appearances at Toyota Center on June 14 and July 2. Lauren Jackson, Sue Bird and the Storm visit Houston on June 25 and August 12. Lisa Leslie and Western Conference rival Los Angeles Sparks come to town in their only game this season at Toyota Center on July 25. The Sky will make their Houston debut at Toyota Center on June 2.

The 2006 WNBA season concludes on Sunday, August 13, with the playoffs scheduled to begin on Thursday, August 17.
