
Comeback Falls Short as Erie Loses 8-6

The SeaWolves fell behind early on Friday night at Blair County Ballpark and battled back, only to drop the series opener to the Altoona Curve 8-6.
Altoona struck first in the bottom of the second inning against Erie starter Mark Sorensen. With two outs, Sorensen walked back-to-back hitters in Tony Sanchez and Kris Watts. Miles Durham doubled home Sanchez for a 1-0 Curve lead. Brad Chalk followed with a double, bringing home Watts and Durham for a 3-0 Altoona edge. Chalk would come home to score on a Sorensen balk for a 4-0 Altoona lead.
Altoona would add to its lead in the fifth. Brock Holt lead off with a single and was sacrificed over to second on a Starling Marte bunt. Quincy Latimore singled, putting runners on the corners for Jordy Mercer. Mercer singled to left, plating Holt for a 5-0 lead. Jeremy Ferrell singled, loading the bases for Sanchez. Sanchez singled to bring home two more runs as the Curve grabbed a 7-0 lead.
The SeaWolves got on the board in the top of the sixth against reliever Brian Leach. Deik Scram walked with two outs and was tripled home by Ben Guez making it 7-1. It was the second three-bagger of the season for Guez and it snapped a 14 consecutive scoreless innings streak for Erie.
In the seventh, Erie got another run back when Francisco Martinez walked and moved into scoring position on a Bryan Holaday single. Martinez scored on a Jamie Johnson fielder's choice to make it 7-2.
After the Curve put up another run in the bottom of the seventh, Erie attempted to mount a comeback in the top of the eighth against reliever Tom Boleska. Boleska walked Rawley Bishop, served up a double to Scram and walked Guez, loading the bases with no outs. Michael Bertram hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Bishop to make it an 8-3 game. Martinez walked to reload the bases for Holaday. Holaday doubled home Scram and Guez to make it a three-run game at 8-5. Erie would get one more run on a Johnson groundout but would get no closer, falling 8-6.
Reliever Noah Krol picked up his sixth save shutting down the SeaWolves over the final 1.2 innings.
Sorensen (1-1) took the loss allowing seven runs, six earned, on six hits with four walks and a strikeout.
Erie takes on the Curve in the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday night at Blair County Ballpark.5:30 First Pitch. Lefty Casey Crosby (0-1, 6.17 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against LHP Jeff Locke (1-2, 4.35 ERA).
