Comeback Cubs Strike Again to Beat Hot Rods 13-11

South Bend, IN: Another day, another South Bend Cubs comeback effort.

Tonight, the Cubs found themselves in a 9-1 deficit after just the top of the 3rd inning. It was looking like a long night at Four Winds Field as the Bowling Green Hot Rods had a steady lead over the Cubs. However, much like yesterday when South Bend won 9-4, they began to slowly chip away.

With one run in the 2nd, four in the 3rd, and two in the 4th, the Cubs found themselves down 11-7 going into the bottom of the 6th inning. With time on their hands, the Cubs sent Jared Young to the plate to start the 6th.

On the hottest stretch of any Cub this season, Young came up confident as he had reached base nine times in two games. On a fastball from Bowling Green reliever Orlando Romero, Young hit his first home run of the year to get the Cubs within four runs.

And they were far from done.

Romero would only last a short time longer in the inning. The next reliever to take the mound was Jose Disla. The Cubs then loaded the bases, sending left fielder Chris Carrier to the plate. Carrier dug in, saw a pitch he liked, and smoked a ball high into the night sky. After carrying and carrying towards the left field bleachers, the ball finally landed. It was a Carrier grand slam.

With all of this happening with nobody out, the Cubs had come all the way back. 13-11.

The next step was protecting the lead. Elvis Diaz earned the win for the Cubs, but Brian Glowicki shut things down in the late innings to earn the save. Glowicki tossed three innings of shut-out ball, striking out four.

Tuesday marked the night of the home run ball for the Cubs. Michael Cruz, Austin Filiere, Young, and Carrier all homered for the first time. Only Miguel Amaya had a home run on the season prior to tonight.

Cubs starter Brendon Little only made it through two-thirds of an inning for his first Midwest League start. The Cubs bullpen had to pitch 8.1 innings in order to get the win. The only Cubs pitcher that has not thrown yet this season is Jose Albertos, who will start tomorrow.

The Cubs improve to 3-2 on the season with the win. They will have a chance to win the series against Bowling Green tomorrow after taking games one and two. Albertos will make his Midwest League debut. At just 19, he spent last season in Eugene. First pitch 7:05 p.m. from Four Winds Field.
