Macon Mayhem News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS- The Macon Mayhem scored three unanswered goals after trailing the Mississippi RiverKings 5-1, but their comeback attempt fell short, as they lost to Mississippi 6-4 on Tuesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite Macon's Stathis Soumelidis scoring the opening goal of the game, it was a disastrous start for the Mayhem on Tuesday. After the goal that put them up 1-0, the Mayhem allowed four unanswered goals in the first period, and the RiverKings took a 4-1 lead into the first intermission.
Mississippi defenseman Don Olivieri scored a four-on-four goal to open the second period and to take a 5-1 lead in the game. Macon answered back, however, with a pair of goals to get back into the game. Leading scorer Jake Trask scored around the midway point of the second period, assisted by Dakota Klecha, to make it a 5-2 game. Soumelidis scored his second of the game two minutes later to cut the deficit to two goals.
The Mayhem chipped into the Mississippi lead late with a John Siemer power play goal, but that was all they would be able to muster in the third period. Bryan Arneson scored the empty-net goal, and despite outshooting Mississippi 45-21, the Mayhem fell 6-4.
NOTABLE STATS
Charlie Finn earned his fifth straight start, but he did not finish the game. He allowed the first three goals before being pulled in favor of Troy Passingham, who allowed two goals before the empty-net goal.
In his professional hockey debut, defenseman Jarrett Kup tallied one assist - his first professional point. Stathis Soumelidis led the team with two goals, while Jimmy Soper and Brandon Pfeil tallied two assists apiece.
