DESTROYERS LAST WEEK:
Columbus Destroyers 24
Kansas City Brigade 45
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Destroyers Defensive specialist Jerald Brown had a pair of interceptions in the endzone, but it was not enough as the Brigade defense forced five turnovers en route to a 45-24 victory in front of a crowd of 14,632 fans at Kemper Arena on Sunday.
In what could be considered a defensive battle in the game of Arena Football, both Columbus and Kansas City failed to score a passing touchdown until the end of the third quarter when Brigade quarterback Andy Kelly found offensive specialist Jerel Myers for an 11 yard touchdown to give the Brigade a 28-10 lead after three quarters.
The Destroyers looked to be in control from the start when Brown picked off a Kelly pass at the goal line and returned it 26 yards deep into Brigade territory on Kansas City's first drive. It appeared that the Destroyers would score first, but as fullback/linebacker Leroy Thompson was tackled near the end zone, the ball popped loose and the Brigade recovered.
The Brigade (1-3) got on the scoreboard first when Kelly marched the Brigade down the field and capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. After tacking on a field goal, Kansas City added to its lead when defensive specialist Denario Smalls intercepted a Billy Dicken pass and returned it 39 yards for a score.
The Destroyers (1-3) got on the board thanks to the defense. Wide receiver/linebacker Thabiti Davis recovered a Kansas City fumbled kickoff and returned it seven yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 15-7.
The teams then traded field goals after that. Destroyers emergency kicker Danny Kight drilled a 46-yarder to cut the Brigade lead to 18-10. Brigade kicker Tim Seder added a 22-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give Kansas City a 21-10 lead at the break.
Thompson got a second chance at the start of the fourth quarter. After wide receiver/defensive back Lincoln Dupree returned a kickoff back to the Brigade 8-yard line, Thompson rushed around the left side on the very next play to bring the Destroyers within 28-16.
After Kansas City added its fourth field goal, Abdul-Salam Noah recovered a Destroyers fumbled kickoff in the end zone to push the Brigade lead to 38-16. The Brigade put the game out of reach when they forced another Destroyers fumble and marched down the field to score again and push its lead to 45-16.
THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT:

The Arizona Rattlers are one of the most storied franchises in Arena Football League history. Former head coach Danny White guided the Rattlers to five ArenaBowl's including three straight appearances spanning the 2002-04. White brought two ArenaBowl titles to Arizona. But White departed following the 2004 season and has since taken over the reigns of the expansion Utah Blaze.

Gene Nudo has taken over for White, and even with the retirement of wide receiver/linebacker Hunkie Cooper, Nudo is rebuilding the Rattlers to their fame.

Last season, under the tutelage of Todd Shell, the Rattlers went 7-9 and finished fourth in the American Conference Western Division. So far this season, the Rattlers have been led by 12-year veteran quarterback Sherdrick Bonner, who has completed 59-of-95 passes for 821 yards and 12 touchdowns. Offensive specialist Damien Groce leads the team in receiving with 23 receptions for 366 yards and five touchdowns.

LAST MEETING WITH ARIZONA:

The Arizona Rattlers and Columbus Destroyers last met in Week 11 of the 2005 season. The teams battled it out in front of 11,181 fans at America West Arena in Phoenix. The Rattlers used a 21-point third quarter to take control of a tight game and go on to win 70-53.

The Destroyers held a 13-12 edge after the first quarter of play behind a Matt D'Orazio touchdown pass to Damien Groce and Donvetis Franklin 37-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Arizona took a 39-34 lead into the locker room at halftime after the Destroyers had taken a 34-33 with 22 seconds remaining in the half. Arizona quarterback Joe Germaine found Siaha Burley in the endzone with four ticks left on the clock.

It was all Arizona in the second quarter, as the Rattlers broke the game open with 21 unanswered points to take a commanding 60-34 lead.

The Destroyers closed to within 63-47, but the 26-point lead was a little too much for the team to overcome.

D'Orazio finished the game completing 21-of-36 passes for 272 yards and six touchdowns. Groce caught 10 of those passes for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Scott McMullen also saw time at quarterback, completing 4-of-6 passes for 34 yards and rushed for a touchdown as well.

DESTROYERS NOTABLES:

DROP BACK
The Columbus Destroyers could not capitalize on a few scoring chances and turned the ball over five times in a 45-24 loss to the Kansas City Brigade in front of 14,632 fans at Kemper Arena on Sunday. The loss is the third in the row for the Destroyers after opening the season with a victory. Kansas City won its first game in team history by dominating the time of possession and scoring on all five Destroyers turnovers. The Brigade had possession of the ball for 42 minutes, 28 seconds of the 60-minute game. Defensive specialist Jerald Brown had a pair of interceptions and narrowly missed returning both for touchdowns. Both intercepted the first pass on the goal line and intercepted his second pass in the endzone.

FORWARD MOTION
After Friday's game against the Arizona Rattlers, the Destroyers will hit the road to take on National Conference Eastern Division rival New York Dragons. The Destroyers and Dragons both enter the game with an 0-1 mark in Eastern Division play. Columbus and Dallas opened the Eastern Conference season in Week 3 with the Desperados taking home a 52-38 victory. New York and Philadelphia met this past weekend with the Soul winning 75-59. The Destroyers have faced off against the Dragons and have met 12 times in history. New York, along with Las Vegas (12 meetings each) are the most common opponent for the Destroyers. The Dragons hold an 8-4 edge over the Destroyers, including a sweep of last season's series.

HEAD COACHES
DOUG KAY: The Columbus Destroyers hired Doug Kay to take over the role of head coach on July 14, 2005. Kay is in his first season in Columbus and brings 12 years of Arena Football coaching experience. In 10 of his 12 seasons, Kay's teams have qualified for the playoffs, including two ArenaBowl championships. Kay is guiding his third team. He coached the Charlotte Rage in 1995 and the Carolina Cobras in 2000 and 2001.

GENE NUDO: In his first season as a head coach and second as the general manager, Gene Nudo is looking to return the Arizona Rattlers to their prestige of being an ArenaBowl regular. Nudo was named Executive of the Year three times and is the only person to do so.

WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU?
Destroyers defensive specialist Jerald Brown has a knack for big returns, at least on fumbles and interceptions. In Week 1 against the Grand Rapids Rampage, Brown returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown. On Sunday against Kansas City, Brown set a career high in interceptions in a game with two. He narrowly missed returning both for touchdowns. His first interception stopped the Brigade's first drive at the goal line, while the second Brown picked off in the endzone. His two returns totaled 48 yards and brings his season return total to 88 on the season. Brown also led the team in tackles with 6.0 (4UT-4AT).

STILL PERFECT
Destroyers kicker Mark Lewis is perfect. At least he is Mr. Automatic when it comes to extra points. Lewis was acquired via trade with Arizona right before the start of the 2006 season and the move has more than paid off. Lewis has yet to miss an extra point this season, including the five extra points that he connected on this past Saturday. Lewis added an 18-yard field goal as well. He is tied for the Arena Football League's lead in field goal percentage. He is one of four players who remain perfect on the season. The others are Orlando kicker Jay Taylor (15-of-15), Arizona kicker Gary Kral (14-of-14) and Chicago kicker Dan Frantz (6-of-6). He is tied for ninth in scoring amongst kickers. Lewis is 4-of-8 on field goals, which is good enough for sixth best in the AFL in field goal percentage. Lewis missed last weekend's game against the Kansas City Brigade do to an ankle injury.

"SECOND"ARY TO NONE
Sunday's contest against Kansas City was a defensive shootout as both teams' defenses combined to force eight turnovers. The Destroyers had two interceptions and a fumble recovery. The fumble recovery was picked up by wide receiver/linebacker Thabiti Davis, who returned the fumble seven yards for a touchdown. Davis also added a touchdown reception on the day. The defense also forced the Brigade to attempt four field goals. Unfortunately for the Destroyers, Brigade kicker Tim Seder connected on all four attempts from 20, 20, 21 and 39.

LINCOLN IS AS HIGH QUALITY AS THE CAR
Destroyers wide receiver/defensive back Lincoln Dupree has done just about everything he possibly could do so far this season. Dupree, who is one of the primary kick returners for the Destroyers, is among the team leaders in almost every category. On Sunday, he added to all of those numbers as he returned four kickoffs for 103 yards, including a 48-yard return as well as adding three pass receptions for 22 yards. On defense, Dupree had three assisted tackles and a pass break up. On the season, Dupree has 15 kickoff returns for 335 yards, a 28-yard missed field goal return, has hauled in eight passes for 56 yards as well as chipping in with 6.5 tackles and two pass breakups.
BIG RETURN ON INVESTMENT
The Columbus Destroyers have gotten a big return on its investment into all of its kickoff return specialists. This season, the Destroyers have led the Arena Football League in kickoff returns and are third in missed field goal returns. As a team, the Destroyers have returned 23 kickoffs for 517 yards, but have yet to return a kickoff for a touchdown. The kickoff return average of 22.5 is tops in the League, while the 517 total yards ranks second. If you add interception and fumble returns into the mix, defensive specialist Jerald Brown could add another 88 return yards. He has one fumble recovery that he returned 40 yards for a touchdown and returned two interceptions for 48 yards this past weekend.

CARRY ON
Destroyers fullback/linebacker Leroy Thompson has already accomplished one feat this season and it's one that he continues to build on. In the Destroyers season opening game against Grand Rapids, he had nine rushes for 29 yards. On his first rush of the 2006 season, Thompson became the sixth member of the 1,000 career rushing yards club. For his career, Thompson has carried the ball 350 times for 1,044 yards and 63 touchdowns.

PUTTING THE "D" IN DESTROYERS
The Columbus Destroyers defense has been among the best in the Arena Football League this season. The team is allowing 45.0 points per game, which is good enough for fifth best in the AFL. This past weekend against the Kansas City Brigade, the defense only allowed 31 points. The Destroyers defense ranks sixth in the AFL in yards allowed, giving up an average of 268.5 yards per contest.

WHY THEY'RE CALLED IRONMEN
When it comes to protecting their own quarterback and getting to the opposing quarterback, the Destroyers are one of the best in the League. The Destroyers offensive/defensive linemen have been a force on both sides of the ball. The linemen have allowed only one sack of Destroyers quarterbacks this season while sacking the opposing quarterback on four occasions. That gives the team a plus-3 in the sacks by/sacks against ratio, which is good enough for fourth best in the AFL. The Philadelphia Soul lead the League with nine sacks against compared to zero allowed. Offensive/defensive lineman Ken Jones leads the Destroyers in sacks with two.

FAMILIAR FACES
There will be a few players returning "home" on Friday. Three of the players on the Arizona Rattlers active roster played for the Destroyers at one time or another. The most recent is offensive specialist Damien Groce. Groce spent the 2005 season with the Destroyers and was the team's leading receiver. Kicker Gary Kral was a member of the 2003 Buffalo Destroyers and offensive/defensive lineman Jerry Sharp spent the 2002 season as a member of the Buffalo Destroyers.
