Chicago Rush News Release
The Chicago Rush announced today it has extended head coach Mike Hohensee's contract through the 2009 season.
"Mike Hohensee is one of the premier head coaches in the Arena Football League and has done a fantastic job building the Rush into a perennial contender," said Rush president/general manager Mike Polisky. "We are proud of his success in Chicago and excited that he will be with us for at least the next three seasons."
The only head coach in Rush history, Hohensee has guided Chicago to a 50-39 overall record and playoff appearances in each of the team's five seasons. During his tenure the Rush has won two Central Division titles (2002, 2004) and advanced to the AFL semifinals three times (2002, 2004, 2005).
"My family and I are excited to be staying in Chicago through the 2009 season," said Hohensee. "Thanks to the passion and commitment of my staff, players and the entire Rush organization over the past six years, we have been able to build a team we all can be proud of.
"I know I am fortunate to be the head coach of such a progressive organization that is willing to do the little things that so many organizations overlook. Those little things are what lead to success both on and off the field."
One of only four men to be involved in the Arena Football League in each of the league's 20 seasons, Hohensee has taken his teams to the playoffs nine times and won five division titles in his 12 previous seasons as a head coach. His 97 career victories rank him third in AFL history behind Tampa Bay's Tim Marcum (177) and Utah's Danny White (142).
After a stellar career at the University of Minnesota where he was named the University's Athlete of the Year in 1981 and 1982, Hohensee played for the USFL's Washington Federals, the CFL's Ottawa Rough Riders and Toronto Argonauts, and the Chicago Bears. He was the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Gladiators in 1987, where he threw the first touchdown pass in AFL history and played in the first ArenaBowl. After a neck injury ended his playing career, Hohensee became an assistant coach with the Chicago Bruisers in 1989 and then a head coach with the Washington Commandos in 1990
The Rush (2-2) opens a three-game homestand this Sunday, February 26, with a noon game against the San Jose SaberCats (1-3).
