HIGH-SCORING CENTRAL: The Central Division is home to the three highest scoring teams in the AFL -Colorado, Chicago and Nashville. Colorado is first with an average of 56.8 ppg, with the Rush (56) and Kats (55.8) close behind.
LOOKING FOR THREE IN A ROW: The Rush returns home to Allstate Arena Sunday to open a three-game homestand against the San Jose SaberCats. Both Chicago and San Jose opened the season 0-2, but while the Rush has turned things around to even its record at 2-2, the SaberCats have fallen to 1-3 - the team's worst start since 1998. Last week, San Jose fell in Grand Rapids 66-52.
RUSH-SABERCATS HISTORY: After failing in its first four games against the SaberCats, the Rush finally broke through with a 55-39 win over San Jose last year at Allstate Arena. Rush QB Raymond Philyaw passed for six touchdowns and ran for a seventh to help give Chicago the win. The victory also was the first over San Jose for Rush head coach Mike Hohensee, who had never beaten San Jose, entering the game with an 0-8 career record against the âCats.
Overall the Rush is 1-4 all-time vs. San Jose. Here is a look at the all-time series results:

SMITH A DIFFERENCE MAKER IN SERIES: San Jose defensive specialist Omarr Smith has been a key player in the Rush-SaberCats series, intercepting two passes that directly led to two San Jose victories.
When the two teams met during the 2004 regular season, the Rush held a 43-37 lead with less than five minutes remaining and was driving for another score when Smith intercepted a Raymond Philyaw pass. San Jose capitalized, marching down the field and scoring a TD to take a 44-43 lead with one minute remaining. The SaberCats then recovered the ensuing on-side kick and scored two plays later, giving the SaberCats a 51-43 victory.
In 2002 in San Jose, it also was Smith who intercepted a Billy Dicken pass at the San Jose 16-yard line with less than 1:30 to play and the Rush trailing 67-62. Then, on the game's next play, San Jose QB Mark Grieb hit Smith with a 34-yard touchdown pass to give the SaberCats a 74-62 lead and put the game out of reach.
FAMILIAR FACES: Two members of the SaberCats - WR/DB Charles Pauley and assistant coach Dave Witthun have ties to the Rush. Pauley spent the 2005 season with Chicago after being acquired in the 2005 expansion draft, catching 21 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns and recording 14 tackles, one interception and four passes broken up. He was a free agent after the season and returned to San Jose. This year, Pauley is San Jose's second-leading receiver and second-leading tackler, catching 22 passes for 258 yards and five touchdowns, and adding 13.0 tackles, one interception and two passes broken up.
Witthun joined the Rush as an assistant coach prior to the 2002 season and spent four years in Chicago. He left last July to accept the job as director of player personnel and line coach with the SaberCats.
BLOWOUT WIN IN LA BUILDS CONFIDENCE: After having its first three games of the season decided on the final play, the Rush finally put a game away early last week in Los Angeles, blowing out the Avengers 65-46.
Chicago used the final minute of the first half and the first 10 minutes of the third quarter to blow open a close game.
Leading 27-24 with 45 seconds left to go in the first half, Chicago managed the clock perfectly, moving downfield to the LA 8-yard line before QB Matt D'Orazio found Cornelius White in the end zone with six seconds remaining, giving the Rush a 34-24 lead at the break.
The Rush extended its lead to 41-24 on the first drive of the second half, as FB Bob McMillen carried the ball around the right corner for a six-yard score, capping a four-play drive.
Then, on LA's first play from scrimmage of the second half, Rush rookie lineman Khreem Smith sacked LA quarterback Brian Mann, forcing a fumble that was recovered by John Moyer at the Avengers' 15-yard line. Two plays later, McMillen dove in from one-yard out to put the Rush up 48-24.
After a Los Angeles 28-yard field goal by Remy Hamilton narrowed the score to 48-27, Rush kick returner Carlos Wright returned Hamilton's kickoff 55-yards for a TD, putting the Rush ahead 55-27, and putting the game out of reach for good.
THREE GAME HOMESTAND NOT EASY: Even though the Rush is home for the next three weeks the schedule makers didn't make it easy on Chicago. After Sunday's game vs. San Jose the Rush will entertain Dallas on Sunday, March 5, and Colorado on Friday, March 10. Both the Desperados and Crush currently boast 3-1 records.
WE WERE DUE FOR AN EASY ONE: Prior to last week's 65-46 win in Los Angeles, Chicago had played in four-consecutive games that were decided on the final play, dating back to the American Conference final in Colorado last season.
Consecutive games decided on final play:
June 5, 2005 - Colorado QB John Dutton connects with Andy McCullough on a 22-yard touchdown pass in overtime for the winning score.
January 29, 2006 -Dutton hit Colorado OS Damian Harrell with an 11-yard TD pass with one-second left, breaking a 56-56 tie. After a safety on the ensuing kickoff, the Crush had handed Chicago a 65-56 defeat.
February 3, 2006 - Rush QB Matt D'Orazio's one-yard touchdown scramble as time expired was nullified by a Rush penalty, turning a 53-51 Rush win into a 51-47 loss to New York.
February 12, 2006 - D'Orazio's TD pass to CJ Johnson and two-point conversion pass to Cornelius White in overtime gave the Rush a 56-55 win over Nashville.
FINALLY AN OT WIN: Chicago's overtime win over Nashville February 12, was the first overtime victory for the Rush since it defeated Indiana May 18, 2003. Chicago had lost three-consecutive overtime games - all coming during the 2005 season. Overall, Chicago is 3-4 in OT.
HOME COOKIN': The Rush has a 28-15 all-time record at Allstate Arena (including postseason) and is 13-7 at home since the start of the 2004 season.
HOHENSEE EXTENDED THROUGH 2009: Tuesday, the Rush announced it had reached an agreement with head coach Mike Hohensee to extend his contract through the 2009 season.
The only head coach in Rush history, Hohensee has guided Chicago to a 50-39 overall record and playoff appearances in each of the team's five seasons. During his tenure the Rush has won two Central Division titles (2002, 2004) and advanced to the AFL semifinals three times (2002, 2004, 2005).
One of only four men to be involved in the Arena Football League in each of the league's 20 seasons, Hohensee has taken his teams to the playoffs nine times and won five division titles in his 12 previous seasons as a head coach. His 97 career victories rank him third in AFL history behind Tampa Bay's Tim Marcum (177) and Utah's Danny White (142).
Hohensee originally was hired on September 26, 2000. He
8 has a regular season record of 90-78 (including a
46-34 mark with the Rush).
8 has a career 7-9 mark in the postseason.
8 has led the Rush to five-consecutive playoff berths and two Central Division titles (2002 and 2004).
8 is 1-8 all-time vs. San Jose

FIVE MORE YARDS FOR McMILLEN: Rush FB/LB Bob McMillen is just 5 yards shy of breaking the AFL's all-time rushing record currently held by Les Barley. McMillen has carried the ball 15 times for 50 yards this season, bringing his career rushing total to 1,378 yards. With his four carries last week, McMillen passed Barley for second place on the all-time rushing attempts list. Both McMillen and Arizona's Bo Kelly have 427 career attempts.
As part of the league's celebration of its 20th season, McMillen was named one of the AFL's 20 Greatest Players of all-time. In his 12th season, He ranks second on the AFL's all-time rushing list, is tied for second all-time in rushing attempts and ranks third all-time in rushing touchdowns. He has won two ArenaBowl championships (1997 with Arizona and 2002 with San Jose) and is the only player in AFL history to rush for 100 or more yards in seven-consecutive seasons.

D'ORAZIO ON A ROLL: After a rough performance in Week 2 vs. New York, D'Orazio has been named Offensive Player of the Game in back-to-back weeks. During Chicago's two-game winning streak, D'Orazio has completed 41 of 55 passes for 461 yards and seven touchdowns, without throwing an interception, good for a passer rating of 130.9 during the span.
So far this season, D'Orazio has completed 87 of 122 passes for 977 yards and 16 touchdowns while only throwing two interceptions. He enters the game ranked fourth in the AFL in QB rating (120.8) and third in rushing (69 yards).
Brief D'Orazio Bio - Prior to 2006 D'Orazio spent four seasons in the AFL with Milwaukee, Buffalo and Columbus, but only played in 16 career games, with 13 of them coming last season. Entering the year he had connected on 206 of 326 passes for 2,308 yards, 40 touchdowns and seven interceptions and had carried the ball 49 times for 178 yards and seven touchdowns.
D'ORAZIO GREAT IN CLUTCH: Rush QB Matt D'Orazio is at his best when it counts the most. Through four games D'Orazio leads all AFL quarterbacks in fourth quarter passing, completing 21 of 27 passes for 246 yards and four touchdowns in the fourth quarter, for a QB rating of 141.7. In addition, D'Orazio is 7 of 8 on fourth down conversions this season including the fourth-and-15 play in overtime February 12, against Nashville when he found CJ Johnson in the end zone for a touchdown.
JOHNSON BECOMING A HUGE THREAT: Second year offensive specialist C.J. Johnson is proving to be a threat every time he touches the ball. Johnson is the team's leading receiver, catching 20 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns on the season. But running great routes is not the only way Johnson can hurt a defense - so far this season Johnson has attempted two passes, completing both for touchdowns, returned a missed field goal 50 yards for a TD and carried the ball four times for eight yards. His 17-yard touchdown reception on fourth-and-15 in overtime February 12, Nashville might be the team's biggest catch of the season, putting the Rush in position to win the game with the ensuing two-point conversion.
UNERTL GIVES DEFENSE A LIFT: New Rush DS Jeremy Unertl has spent two games in a Rush uniform since his trade from Columbus and has been named ADT Defensive Player of the Game both times. Last week he recorded 5.5 tackles, two passes broken up and returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown in Chicago's win at Los Angeles. The interception return was Chicago's first for a touchdown since Lindsay Fleshman did it against Grand Rapids February 8, 2004.
Originally signed by the Las Vegas Gladiators in 2004, Unertl (6-1, 210, Wisconsin-LaCrosse) is in his third year in the AFL. He played in six games as a rookie with Las Vegas in 2004 and split the 2005 season between Las Vegas and Columbus, playing seven games for the Gladiators and five for the Destroyers. Entering 2006, he has recorded 64.5 tackles, two interceptions and five passes broken up, and caught 14 passes for 108 yards and three touchdowns.
DAN THE MAN: The Rush signed kicker Dan Frantz to a one-year contract February 11, to handle the kicking duties until Keith Gispert is healthy. Frantz has done exactly what he has been asked, converting all 14 of his extra point attempts and three of five field goal attempts. Last week in Los Angeles, Frantz was 8-for-8 on PATs and 3-for-3 on field goals for 17 points, breaking Gispert's record of 15 kicking points in a game set at Detroit on May 2, 2004. Frantz's three field goals also tied the Rush record for field goals in a game held by Gispert and David Cool.
Frantz comes to Chicago after spending the first two years of his AFL career with the San Jose SaberCats, winning an ArenaBowl title as a rookie in 2004. In San Jose, Frantz played in 31 regular season games and converted 209 of 245 PATs (85.3%) and nine of 23 field goals (39.1 %). He tore the ACL in his right knee May 14, 2005, at Arizona and missed the team's final regular season game and the playoffs last year.
KICKER CAROUSEL: Frantz is the third kicker the Rush has had under contract this season and the 15th in franchise history. The Rush lost Keith Gispert to a pulled abductor muscle during pregame warmups Week 1 in Colorado, forcing head coach Mike Hohensee to use backup quarterback Michael Bishop and defensive specialist Todd Howard to handle kickoffs during the game. The Rush then signed Steve Azar to handle the kicking duties for Week 2, but after Azar was just 3 for 5 on PAT attempts and missed his only field goal try vs. New York, he was released.
WRIGHT MAN FOR RETURNS: With the trade of Henry Douglas to Columbus on February 7, the Rush coaches turned to Carlos Wright to handle kickoff returns. After two games, Wright is proving to be a wise choice for the job. Last week in LA, Wright returned seven kicks for 144 yards, including a 55-yard return for his first career touchdown. Overall, Wright has nine kick returns on the season for 175 yards.
PROTECT THAT QB: The Rush offensive line has given up six sacks in the last two weeks and a total of seven sacks so far this season. The Rush line only gave up eight sacks during the entire 2005 season.
UNDER PRESSURE: The Rush defensive line has been causing havoc for opposing quarterbacks early in the 2006 season. Through three games the Rush has eight sacks - more than half as many as 2005 when the team finished the season with 13. Rookie Khreem Smith leads the club with 2.5 sacks and D.J. Bleisath is second with 2.0 sacks. The Rush team record for sacks in a season is 23, set during the 2004 season.
ROOKIE SMITH A FORCE ON D-LINE: After winning the af2's Lineman of the Year award in 2005, Rush rookie lineman Khreem Smith is showing AFL teams his 19 sacks in 16 regular season games last year was no fluke. So far this season, Smith has caused constant problems for opposing offensive lines, registering 5.0 tackles, a team-leading 2.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. His third quarter sack and forced fumble on LA quarterback Brian Mann last Saturday gave the Rush great field position at the Avengers 15-yard line. Two plays later, Chicago scored to take a 48-24 lead.
JOHN MOYER 8TH ALL-TIME IN SACKS: Rush lineman John Moyer combined with FB/LB Bob McMillen on a sack of Aaron Garcia February 3 vs. New York, bringing his career total to 34.5 - including 29.5 as a member of the Rush. Moyer is currently in eighth place on the AFL's all-time list for career sacks and needs just two more sacks to pass Andre Bowden for seventh place.
Here are Chicago's season and career sack leaders:
Player Season Player Career
John Moyer 10.0 (2004) John Moyer 29.5

James Baron 3.0 (2004)
James Baron 3.0 (2002)
Jamie McGourty 3.0 (2004)
CALL MOYER MR. TOUCHDOWN: Everyone knows that Moyer is one of the game's best pass rushers, but what makes Moyer special is his ability to excel on offense and special teams in addition to defense. Moyer has proven to be a very capable receiver, catching three passes for 44 yards and three touchdowns on the season, including a 30 yard touchdown pass from Matt D'Orazio February 12, against Nashville. Dating back to last season, Moyer has caught 11 passes with eight of them going for touchdowns.
TURNOVER TURNAROUND: One of the best trends through the first quarter of the 2006 season involves Chicago's success on the turnover front. After finishing the 2004 season tied with Los Angeles for the best turnover ratio in the AFL at +15, the Rush dipped to 16th last year with a -6 ratio. Through four games this season the Rush ranks 4th in the league with a +3 ratio.
INJURIES TAKING THEIR TOLL: The Rush played its game last week in Los Angeles without two of its starters - WR/LB Etu Molden and DS Tony Lukins. Molden missed the game with a shoulder injury and Lukins with ankle and hamstring injuries. Both players suffered their injuries February 12 against Nashville. The Rush hopes to have Molden back this week against San Jose, but Lukins will miss at least one more game.
In addition, FB/LBs Charlie Cook and Levelle Brown remain on the team's injured reserve list. Cook fractured his sternum during training camp and Brown dislocated his shoulder when the team was practicing in Columbus in January. Neither is expected back for a few more weeks.
THREE JACKS: With the combination of Etu Molden, Cornelius White and DeJuan Alfonzo, the Rush might have the best trio of "Jack" linebackers in the AFL. Both Molden and White were named to the AFL's All-Ironman team in 2005 and Alfonzo always seems to make something happen when he is on the field.
Despite missing last week's game, Molden has 13 receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns, while White has caught 11 passes for 154 yards, four TDs and the game-winning two-point conversion in overtime vs. Nashville. On Defense, White has recorded 8.5 tackles, forced and recovered a fumble and broken up a pass. Molden has added 3.5 tackles and recovered a fumble.
WELCOME BACK ZO: After missing the season's first three games nursing an Achilles injury, WR/LB DeJuan Alfonzo returned to the lineup last week in Los Angeles. Alfonzo enjoyed a big game on both sides of the ball, catching four passes for 52 yards and a TD, returning a kickoff 11 yards for a TD and recording 5.5 tackles and a pass broken up in the game.
MOLDEN BREAKS CHATMAN RECORDS: Rush WR/LB Etu Molden has moved past former offensive specialist Antonio Chatman for franchise records for career receptions and total touchdowns. Molden needs just 102 yards and three receiving touchdowns to break Chatman's records for receiving yards and receiving TDs as well.
Molden led the Rush in all receiving categories in both 2004 and 2005, catching 96 passes for 1,158 yards and 25 touchdowns last year. Overall, Molden scored 30 TDs in 2005 (25 receiving, 4 rushing, 1 return).

300-YARD PASSERS: San Jose QB Mark Grieb has passed for 300 yards against the Rush defense once in his career. Grieb is one of six different quarterbacks to pass for more than 300 yards against the Rush, joining Donnie Davis, Clint Dolezel, Aaron Garcia, Andy Kelly and Clint Stoerner.
