Columbus Destroyers News Release
QUICK FACTS:
Columbus Destroyers (4-9) vs
Grand Rapids Rampage (1-12)
Date: Friday, May 14, 2004
Kickoff: 7:00 p.m. (ET)
Site: Nationwide Arena (17,171)
Officials: Steve Pamon (Referee), Jeff Carr (Umpire), Dale Newhouse (Head Linesman), Roger McMinn (Line Judge), Tony Lombardo (Back Judge)
Radio: Columbus' flagship station WAZU-107.1 FM "The Big Wazoo" will broadcast the game live with Marty Bannister handling the play-by-play duties and Greg Frey supplying color commentary.
Series Record: The Destroyers have met the Rampage four times and never beaten them. The two teams squared off last year on February 1, to start off the season. The Rampage walked away victorious, 54-36.
Series Streaks: Grand Rapids has a four game streak over the Destroyers winning every meeting between the two. The two teams have played every year since the Destroyers' inception in 1999 except for the 2000 season.
Coaches: Destroyers, Earle Bruce (4-9 in 2004, 17-25 overall). Rampage, Bob Cortese (1-12 in 2004, 14-29 overall).
OVERVIEW: The Columbus Destroyers kicked off their inaugural season with a win in Indiana, but fell into a six game skid resulting in a 1-6 record after seven weeks of play. After their bye week in week eight, though, the Destroyers came on strong, winning three of their next five games. Columbus enters Friday's game with a bad taste in their mouths after a 21-point loss to Georgia. Both teams, the Destroyers and the Grand Rapids Rampage enter this week's match at the bottom of their divisions, the Rampage at the bottom of the league, but fighting their way back. The Destroyers found themselves in a pickle at halftime last week after giving up 31 points in the second quarter to go down by 21. The Rampage acquired coach Cortese in the off-season hoping that he would bring good fortunes with him. The opposite, though, has followed him to Grand Rapids. In the midst of a four-game losing streak, the Rampage are at the bottom of the AFL at a 1-12 mark
THE SERIES: The Destroyers have met the Rampage four times in the last five seasons, coming up short in each of those four meetings. Last season was kicked off with the two contestants facing each other, Grand Rapids besting the Destroyers 54-36. That match marked the largest margin of victory the Rampage had over the Destroyers. Every other game between the two had been close the largest margin coming in the 2001 meeting of four points, 40-44.

THE IFS...
If Columbus defeats Grand Rapids, it would...
· Give Columbus their first win over the Rampage.
· Give Columbus their fifth victory on the season.
· Could move the Destroyers out of last place in the division.
· Give Columbus a 5-9 overall record.
· Prevent the Destroyers from falling to 4-10 on the season.
· Give the Destroyers their third home win of the season.
· Give the Destroyers the same number wins they had last season.
LAST WEEK: In an otherwise evenly matched game with the Georgia Force, a disastrous 31-point second quarter put the Destroyers in a hole of which they could never climb out. OS Sedrick Robinson was the shining beacon of hope during the second quarter, scoring the only two touchdowns of the quarter for the Destroyers, both on kickoff returns. Robinson had a career day, amassing 353 all-purpose (2nd most in franchise history) and 30 points on five touchdowns (tied for 1st in team history). He returned a total of nine kickoffs for 238 yards, two of them to the house, setting a new team single-game record. He also caught eight passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns and rushed once for one yard and one touchdown. QB Ryan Vena also led the Destroyers offensively completing 14 of his 23 attempts for 184 yards and three touchdowns. He was also the team's leading rusher with nine yards and a touchdown. DS Del Lee led the team defensively with 7.5 tackles and two passes broken up. QB Leon Murray paved the road to victory for the Force, 24 of his 34 passes finding their mark for 334 yards and eight touchdowns. OS Markeith Cooper led the game in receiving with 10 receptions for 148 yards and three touchdowns. The Destroyers and Force traded scores for the majority of the first half until, after his two returns for touchdowns in a row, Robinson fumbled on a kick return. The lose ball was scooped up and returned to the Destroyers' one yard line by Georgia's Morris Anderson. The Force went on to score 17 strait points in the last minute of the first half, with a field goal coming off an interception thrown by Vena in the closing second of the half. The field goal put the Destroyers down by 21 going into the locker rooms. Columbus was unable to put a dent into the lead of the Force trading scores for the remainder of the game for a final score of 72-51. The loss dropped the Destroyers to 4-9, dashing any hopes of a 500 season or a long-shot playoff birth.
NEXT WEEK: After meeting the Rampage, the Destroyers will pack their bags and hit the road on a two week trip to the western United States for the remaining two games of the season. Next week they will go toe-to-toe with the Dallas Desperados and attempt to avenge the 35-51 loss they were handed earlier this season.
LAST SERIES MEETING: The last time the Rampage and the Destroyers faced one another, Grand Rapids came out of the contest on top. The Rampage handled the Destroyers winning the match 54-36.

THE COACHES:
Columbus â Earle Bruce, 4th season (1st with Destroyers) 4-9 in 2004; 17-25 overall
Earle Bruce returns to the Area Football League as head coach and general manager for the Columbus Destroyers. Bruce landed his first collegiate head-coaching job at the University of Tampa in 1972, where he fashioned a 10-2 record, including a win in the Tangerine Bowl. He took over at Iowa State University from 1973-1978, where he guided the Cyclones to eight wins in each of his last three seasons. Bruce succeeded long-time coach Woody Hayes at Ohio State in 1979 and went on to compile an 81-26-1 record from 1979-1987 in Columbus. He led the Buckeyes to two outright Big Ten titles (1979, 1984) and two co-championships (1981, 1986) and was named the 1980 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Following his tenure in Columbus, Bruce coached at the University of Northern Iowa in 1988 before taking over the Colorado State University program from 1989-92. He led the Rams to their best season in school history, a 9-4 record that included a win in the Freedom Bowl. Bruce began his coaching career in the AFL during the 1993-1994 seasons with the Cleveland Thunderbolts. He spent the 1994-1995 seasons with the St. Louis Stampede, making theirs the best record of an expansion football team at 9 and 4 and taking them to the playoffs. In 2001 Bruce coached the Iowa Barnstormers in the AF2 League.
Grand Rapids â Bob Cortese, 3rd season (1st with Rampage) 1-12 in 2004; 14-29 overall
On August 21, 2003, the Grand Rapids Rampage announced the hiring of Bob Cortese as the second head coach and director of football operations in franchise history. Cortese brings six seasons of Arena Football experience, seven Coach of the Year awards and more than three decades of involvement at the professional, collegiate and high school levels to Grand Rapids. In 32 seasons as a head coach, the Rochester, N.Y., native has compiled an overall record of 244-102-9 (.705), including a 13-17 mark in two AFL seasons (2000-01) with the defunct Oklahoma Wranglers. During their inaugural season in Oklahoma City, the Wranglers reached the AFL quarterfinals after battling through the league's toughest schedule. At the time, Cortese's club earned the distinction of becoming the lowest seed (#10) to ever win an AFL playoff game, authoring a 52-38 road upset of New England in the first round.
INJURY REPORT:. In week two wide receiver/defensive back Jason Collins-Baker suffered a season-ending torn ACL. In week four, in the Dallas game, Antwon Jones suffered a sprained knee, leaving him on IR for the foreseeable future. Kelron Sykes was placed on IR after hyper extending his knee versus Orlando. SEDRICK THE ENTERTAINER
Sedrick Robinson has proven to be one of the most dangerous offense threats in the league this season, but last week versus the Georgia Force he put an exclamation point on the statement setting, tying or coming very close to numerous single game franchise records. He set the record for most kick return yards in a game at 238 yards, tied the record for kickoffs returned for touchdowns with two, tied the record for most points in a game with 30 (two receptions, two returns and one rush for touchdowns) and set season and personal highs with 353 all-purpose yards (which is good for ninth in league history). Entering this week's play, Robinson has 2,110 all-purpose yards, which is third in the AFL.
ALL-PURPOSE YARDAGE IN 2004
Player (team) Rush Rec Kick Total
Will Pettis (DAL) 36 922 1,579 2,537
Steve Smith (GRA) -1 644 1,655 2,298
Sedrick Robinson (CLB) 35 821 1,254 2,110
54-POINT LINE
The Columbus Destroyers have not lost a game when they have scored 54 points or higher. Two of those have come with scores of 60 or more. The Destroyers have lost only twice if they score more that 46. Those losses came at the hands of the Carolina Cobras when they lost by one point on the last play of the game and last week when they lost by 21 points to the Georgia Force. Every game when they have scored fewer than 54 points, the Destroyers have come out on the bottom of the pile.
YELLOW FEVER
The Destroyers, though improved are still one of the most heavily penalized teams in the AFL. They have been penalized the second most times with 127 faux pas, and have been penalized the most yards in the league going 819 yards in the wrong direction. The only team to have been penalized more times is the Dallas Desperados with 132 violations. They are also right on the heels of Columbus in penalty yards with 817.
LOST OPPORTUNTY
After last week's loss to Georgia the Destroyers squandered any chance at a .500 season. With only three games left in the season the best Columbus can hope for is a 7-9 season, if they win all their remaining games.
NEW FACES
Last week saw a couple newcomers to the Destroyers get some playing time. OL/DL Jamarr Ward compiled 2.5 tackles including a sack for two yards and a forced fumble. QB Jay McDonagh also got some time under center, completing four of five passes for 35 yards.
PLAYING WITH TWO QBs
Sedrick Robinson has been a thorn in the sides of defensive coordinators receiving, rushing and returning kickoffs. Robinson is also, though, the team's highest rated passer at 149.3. He is two for three on the season with two touchdowns and 46 yards.
MOVIN' ON UP
In his rookie season with the Destroyers, Quarterback Ryan Vena has quickly ascended towards the top of the Destroyers' all-time rushing list for a single season as well as career. In only 11 games of action, Vena is currently fourth all-time in Destroyers history with 152 yards rushing and with his last score three weeks ago versus Tampa Bay, moved up to fourth all-time in rushing touchdowns with eight and added his ninth last week vs Georgia. Vena's 152 yards gained on the ground is only 8 short of the all-time record for rushing yards in a single season (160/Tony Burse-1999).

THE TURNOVER TREND
Four. That is the number of games the Destroyers have won when they win the turnover battle. The Destroyers are 0-6 when they lose it. Every single one of their wins has come when the loose balls have rolled their way, further proving that the team that wins turnovers wins games.
