Fleming named US Army Ironman of the Week
May 11, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Orlando Predators News Release
ORLANDO, Fla. (May 11) --- By statistical numbers, WR/LB Cory Fleming did not have one of his best offensive days of the season against the VooDoo last Sunday, catching just five passes for 56 yards and just one touchdown. But by any other standard, Fleming played a huge role in Orlando's 45-40 win over New Orleans and his efforts were noticed by the Arena Football League, who named Fleming its "US Army Ironman of the Week" on Tuesday.
Fleming's lone touchdown put the Predators ahead 7-0 in the first quarter. Playing the up-back position on kickoff returns, Fleming also recovered four Brian Schmitz kickoffs that either hit the iron frame and/or eluded Travis McGriff, saving four potential turnovers. Fleming had a sensational run on one of those kickoffs, returning it 45 yards to set up Orlando's second touchdown.
Defensively, Fleming had one tackle, batted down a pass and thwarted a four quarter New Orleans drive with a sensational interception inside the Predators five-yard line.
The announcement marked the fourth time in Fleming's career that he has earned "Ironman of the Week."
Fleming also continued his assault on Barry Wagner's single season receiving records. The totals from New Orleans gave Fleming 106 receptions for 1,318 yards and 27 touchdowns on the 2004 season with three games remaining. The 106 receptions is a new Orlando Predators single-season mark, as Fleming passed Barry Wagner's 1997 mark of 99 receptions two weeks ago against Tampa Bay. With 1,318 receiving yards, Fleming would need to average less than 70 yards per game in his final three games to pass Wagner's single season record of 1,527 yards â also set in the 1997 season. Fleming also needs just five receiving touchdowns in the final three games to pass Wagner's record of 31 receiving touchdowns in 1997. Fleming is currently number two in the Arena Football League in receptions.
