THE STAKES: A chance for some revenge, an opportunity to move into the thick of the playoff race, and the opportunity to extend one of the most impressive streaks in Arena Football League history will be on the line as the Orlando Predators (7-6) travel to Austin to take on the Wranglers (8-5) in a key Southern Division match-up on Sunday. The Predators will be looking to avenge a 49-48 overtime loss to the Wranglers in Week 2 of the Arena Football League season. Austin stunned the Predators when QB Joe Hamilton's foot ticked the sideline a split second before he crossed the goal line on a two-point conversion attempt in overtime to preserve a one-point win.

More importantly, the game has significant playoff ramifications. Orlando is currently tied with Los Angeles for the eighth best record in the AFL. New York, Los Angeles and this week's opponent Austin – the final three teams on the Predators schedule – are all in the top eight which means Orlando can control its own destiny by winning out.

Finally, a victory would insure that the Predators would finish with a non-losing record in the regular season for an AFL record 13th consecutive season. With a win, the Preds would finish no worse than 8-8. With two more wins (counting any playoff appearances), Orlando would also insure an overall winning record for a 13th consecutive year (Orlando was 7-7 in 1999, but finished at 9-8 with a pair of playoff wins).

QUOTE/UNQUOTE
"It was big because it was a game we had to win, not because it got me to 50. Same applies to this week. We need to win for playoff seeding, not to make my resume look good."

-- Jay Gruden on hitting 50 career wins last week against New Orleans

THE COACHES
PREDS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN
After spending the last two seasons as the Orlando's quarterback, JAY GRUDEN returned to the bench as the team's head coach in 2004. After a Hall of Fame career as a quarterback for the Tampa Bay Storm, Gruden began his coaching career in 1997 by serving as offensive assistant for the Nashville Kats. One season later, the Predators made him the youngest head coach in the AFL. Gruden would go on to lead the Predators to three consecutive appearances in the ArenaBowl and a pair of championships. After guiding the Predators to a fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs in 2001, Gruden shocked the AFL world by announcing his intentions to resign in order to return to the playing field after a five-year layoff. In two seasons as Predators quarterback, Gruden directed the Predators to back-to-back appearances in the semifinals, falling one game short of his goal each season. In 2003, he recorded a 10-0 record with 49 touchdown passes and two interceptions as a starting quarterback during the regular season. Off-season surgery, combined with the tragic loss of former Head Coach Fran Papasedero in a June 19, 2003 traffic accident, resulted in Gruden returning to the sideline. Gruden will take a 50-29 (.633) all-time coaching record into the Austin game. He is 42-27 in regular season games (.609) and 8-2 as a head coach in playoff games (.800).

Perry Moss, 1991-97 67-31 .684

AUSTIN HEAD COACH SKIP FOSTER
Skip Foster is in his first season as an AFL head coach and has guided the expansion Wranglers to impressive 8-5 mark so far. Although coaching his first AFL season, Foster is no stranger to the Arena Football League game. For the past three years, he was head coach of Tulsa Talons of the "arenafootball2" league, where he led the team to a regular season mark of 13-3 and an "af2" title last year. Under Foster's guidance, Tulsa was the only "af2" to go undefeated for three consecutive years at home.

FUN FACT: Austin Head Coach Skip Foster served as an assistant coach for his father Dick Foster at Coffeyville Community College. After winning a national championship in 1983, Dick retired and Skip took over. In 1990, Coffeyville won another national championship (undefeated season), making Dick and Skip Foster the only father/son combination to win National Junior College Athletic Association National championships at the same school!

GRUDEN HITS 50: With Orlando's 45-40 win over New Orleans last week, Jay Gruden became just the ninth coach in Arena Football League history to win 50 career games. Now in his fifth season, Gruden has averaged more than 10 victories per season and has guided the Predators to four playoff appearances, three trips to the ArenaBowl and pair of championships (1998 and 2000). SERIES HISTORY AND NOTES: A 2004 expansion team, there's not much here in history between the Predators and Wranglers. The teams met in Week 2 of the AFL season, with Austin winning a thrilling 49-48 overtime decision...with the score tied at 42-42, Orlando's Jay Taylor missed a 22-yard field goal with less than three minutes remaining...Austin ran the clock down to three seconds remaining, only to see Toy Dodson miss a field goal from 22 yards out to send the game into overtime...Orlando won the toss and elected to defer and John Kaleo needed just five plays to score, hitting Darryl Hammond on a 10-yard scoring pass on a third and goal play...Dodson converted the extra point and Austin led 49-42...The Predators countered with a 2-yard touchdown run from Marlon-Moye Moore to make it 49-48 and Orlando elected to go for the win on a 2-point conversion...QB Joe Hamilton rolled out to his right and appeared to get into the end zone but the officials ruled his right foot stepped out of bounds on the 1-yard line..."We had the right play called and it should have been a walk in," Head Coach Jay Gruden said. "But one player went the wrong way on the play and it allowed the linebacker to force Joe to the outside. We didn't play well defensively and Austin deserved the win, but it was frustrating to have the game end that way."

McENTYRE SNAGS TWO MORE; SCORES HIS 15th CAREER TOUCHDOWN

Kenny "The Glove" McEntyre continued his record breaking season last week with two interceptions against the New Orleans VooDoo. With his two picks, McEntyre extended his AFL career record in that category to 55 and took over the league lead with nine interceptions. Counting post-season games, McEntyre now has 65 career interceptions in just 101 games played. McEntyre returned his second interception 18 yards for a touchdown, marking McEntyre's 15th career touchdown – the most ever by a defensive specialist who does not serve as the deep man on kickoff returns. McEntyre's touchdowns include 11 on interception returns, one fumble return, 1 missed field goal return (on blocked kick) and two on on-sides kickoff returns. McEntyre's nine regular season interception returns for touchdowns is the most in Arena Football League history.

Note: With three pass break-ups against the VooDoo last week, McEntyre also became the first Predators player to reach the century mark in that category. McEntyre now has 101 career pass deflections to go with his 55 career interceptions.

PREDATORS BANGED UP FOR GAME VS. AUSTIN
Mounting injuries continue to be a major concern for Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden. In addition to leading rusher Marlon Moye-Moore, who was lost for the season with a horrific knee injury three weeks ago, the Predators saw their injury list grow even more last week when Sean Riley injured a knee and was placed on IR on Tuesday by the Predators. Here is the current list of the wounded:

Connell Maynor QB Left Wrist, Knee Questionable
Michael Brown WR/DB Hamstring Questionable
James Bowden WR/LB Groin Questionable
Marlon Moore FB/LB Knee Out
Jermaine Smith OL/DL Foot/hamstring Questionable
Sean Riley WR/DB Knee Out
Lin-J Shell WR/DB Shoulder Doubtful

McENTYRE IS TRUE IRONMAN
Kenny "The Glove" McEntyre has been one of the toughest competitors to ever wear a Predators uniform. Despite numerous injuries in his career, McEntyre has yet to miss a start since coming to the Predators in the tail end of the 1998 season. Counting the game against New Orleans
last week, McEntyre has now answered the bell for 101 consecutive games -- building on his own team record.

FLEMING KEEPS STRING ALIVE
With five receptions for 56 yards and one score against New Orleans, WR/LB Cory Fleming has now caught at least one touchdown pass in 22 consecutive games with the Predators. Fleming has also scored at least one touchdown in 28 of 30 career games with Orlando (streaks include playoff games).

PREDATORS GET DEFENSIVE, LEAD LEAGUE IN SCORING, TOTAL DEFENSE
If defense indeed wins championships, Orlando Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden has to feel good about his 2004 team – particularly its performance in the last five weeks. Through Week 14 of the regular season, the Predators led the league in scoring defense (44.07), passing defense (225.0) and total defense (241.8). Orlando has taken over the league-lead in all three categories since posting a 4-1 record over the last five games. The comparison between the first eight weeks and last five weeks of the regular season is remarkable as the chart below indicates:

1st 8 Games Last 5 Games
Points Allowed 390 183
Points/Game 48.75 36.60
Total Defense 2046 1097
Yards Per Game 255.8 219.4
Passing Defense 1859 1066
Yards Per Game 255.8 213.2

NEEDS
WR/LB Cory Fleming Needs:
--26 receptions to reach 700 for his career
--Needs 11 TD receptions to reach 200 for career
--Needs 210 receiving yards to set new Predators
Single season record (1,527 Barry
Wagner, 1997)

QB Joe Hamilton Needs:
--Needs four TD passes to reach 50 for season
--Needs 15 TD passes to establish Predators rookie
Record (Craig Whelihan, 60, 2001)

OL/DL Jermaine Smith Needs:
--Three QB sacks to set new Predators single
Season record (EJ Burt 9.5, 2003)

DS Kenny McEntyre Needs:
--19 Tackles to break Orlando's all-time career
Record (Barry Wagner, 398.5, 1992-99)

OS Travis McGriff Needs:
--23 all-purpose yards to hit 1,000 for 2004

TAYLOR KEEPS PAT STRING ALIVE
Kicker Jay Taylor was a perfect 6 for 6 in extra points and has now booted 25 consecutive extra points. The Predators record is 34, set by Charlie Baumann over two seasons (1996-97). Counting field goals, Taylor has made 36 of his last 38 combined attempts. For the season, Taylor is 15 of 22 on field goal attempts (68.1%) and 66 of 72 on extra point attempts (91.7%). At his current pace, Taylor is on target to break two single season career marks for accuracy, as the Predators single season record for field goal percentage is 58.3% (David Cool, 1998) and the single season record for extra point percentage is 89.2 % (Charlie Baumann, 1996).

FLEMING EARNS IROMAN OF THE WEEK HONORS; CONTINUES ASSAULT ON WAGNER'S CAREER MARKS
By statistical numbers, WR/LB Cory Fleming did not have one of his best offensive days of the season against the VooDoo last Sunday, catching just five passes for 56 yards and just one touchdown. But by any other standard, Fleming played a huge role in Orlando's 45-40 win over New Orleans and his efforts were noticed by the Arena Football League, who named Fleming its US Army "Ironman of the Week" on Tuesday.

Fleming's one touchdown put the Predators ahead 7-0 in the first quarter. Playing the up-back position on kickoff returns, Fleming also recovered four Brian Schmitz kickoffs that either hit the net frame and/or eluded Travis McGriff, saving four potential turnovers. Fleming had a sensational run on one of those kickoffs, returning it 45 yards to set up Orlando's second touchdown.

Defensively, Fleming had one tackle, batted down a pass and thwarted a fourth quarter New Orleans drive with a sensational interception inside the Predators five-yard line.

Fleming also continued his assault on Barry Wagner's single season receiving records. The totals from New Orleans gave Fleming 106 receptions for 1,318 yards and 27 touchdowns on the 2004 season with three games remaining. The 106 receptions is a new Orlando Predators single-season mark, as Fleming passed Barry Wagner's 1997 mark of 99 receptions two weeks ago against Tampa Bay. With 1,318 receiving yards, Fleming would need to average less than 70 yards per game in his final three games to pass Wagner's single season record of 1,527 yards – also set in the 1997 season. Fleming also needs just five receiving touchdowns in the final three games to pass Wagner's record of 31 receiving touchdowns in 1997. Fleming is currently number two in the Arena Football League in receptions.

HAMILTON'S RUN LONGEST OF SEASON
Joe Hamilton's 42-yard run against the New Orleans was the longest in the Arena Football League this season and also tied for the second longest run in Orlando Predators history. It was also a key early play in Orlando's victory. Leading 21-6, Orlando saw New Orleans cut the lead to 21-13 on a Dan Curran 1-yard touchdown run. On the Preds next possession, former Orlando star BJ Cohen stripped Hamilton of the ball and recovered for a touchdown to cut the lead to 21-20 and give the VooDoo momentum. Cory Fleming avoided a Predators disaster by recovering Brian Schmitz's ensuing kickoff off that hit off the iron. Working deep in his own territory, Hamilton faded back into his own end zone, could not find an open receiver, put a move on VooDoo linebacker Lamont Moore and scrambled 42 yards to the New Orleans 4. Two plays later, Rupert Grant scored and Orlando took control of the game with a 28-20 lead. The longest run in Predators history was a 45-yard run by Tommy Dorsey vs. Albany in 1999 (TD).

PLAYERS TO WATCH
ORLANDO / AUSTIN
WRANGLER OS TACOMA FONTAINE
Orlando did not face this explosive wide receiver in the season opener. Fontaine joined the team later in the year and has been nothing short of sensational. In just 10 games, he has caught 66 passes for 1,034 yards and a team-leading 21 touchdowns. He is averaging more than 103 yards per game receiving and will present a lot of challenges to a Predators secondary that has been banged up with injuries to Lin-J Shell, Michael Brown and Sean Riley.

ORLANDO QB JOE HAMILTON
Statistically, Hamilton did not have one of his better games last week, throwing for just 166 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Still, he completed 66.7% of his passes and led Orlando to points on six of nine full possessions. Part of the reason for the decline in passing yards were the numerous times the Predators had a short field because of New Orleans turnovers, combined with two Orlando fumbles that were not Hamilton's fault. Still, Hamilton had one interception and one fumble, something that Head Coach Jay Gruden believes can not happen this week if his team is to win a second consecutive road game.

WRANGLER WR/LB DARRYL HAMMOND
Darryl Hammond, the ageless wonder in his 14th AFL season, could also probably go by the nickname "PRED KILLER." Throughout his AFL career, Hammond has constantly gave the Predators fits, playing key roles in several victories – including the Austin game earlier this season. Hammond's fourth quarter TD pass forged a 42-42 tie in the fourth quarter and then he caught the game-winning 10-yard TD pass in overtime. "Darryl's never flashy, but he's a big-time player who makes big time plays." Preds coach Jay Gruden said. "We obviously need to be aware of where he is around the goal line."

PREDS DS KENNY McENTYRE
The AFL's leader in interceptions with nine – including one against the Wranglers, Kenny McEntyre had a rough overall game against Austin as the Predators were torched for 307 passing yards. Orlando's pass defense has improved dramatically since obtaining Damon Mason, allowing McEntyre to spend the majority of his time at corner instead of the middle.

NEXT WEEK
The Predators return to the TD Waterhouse Centre to face the red-hot New York Dragons in the home finale for the Predators. Austin hits the road for a Southern Division match-up with the Georgia Force.
