Garcia completed seven touchdowns to five different receivers as he led the Dragons to touchdowns on all nine possessions in the contest. Both teams were tied at seven after the first quarter until Las Vegas used a 28-point run in the second quarter to bring a 35-14 lead into halftime. Turnovers plagued the Soul throughout the game. Hammel threw four interceptions and was responsible for a lost fumble. Marlion Jackson also accounted for a lost fumble. The Gladiators capitalized on Soul turnovers by converting five of the six turnovers into touchdowns.

COBRAS NEXT WEEK: Carolina hosts the Grand Rapids Rampage in the team's 2004 home finale on Saturday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Charlotte Coliseum. The Rampage lead the all-time series 4-1, with the Cobras sole victory coming in the 2002 postseason. The 72-64 win stands as Carolina's only postseason victory in team history.
HEAD COACHES: Ron Selesky (6-13) makes his return to the Cobras sidelines this season after spending the 2004 season as head coach and director of football operations for the Buffalo Destroyers. He previously was a member of Carolina's original coaching staff in 2000 as an assistant coach and director of player personnel. Prior to joining the Destroyers, Selesky earned af2 Coach of the Year honors in 2002, guiding the Albany Conquest to a regular season mark of 13-3 and a Northeast Division title. Selesky also spent the 2001 season on the sidelines for the af2 Louisville Fire, leading the team to a 6-10 mark. He also serves as the director of player personnel and assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Storm from 1997 to 1999. With the Storm, his teams compiled a 31-11 regular season record and earned a berth in the 1998 ArenaBowl.
Michael Trigg (75-74) enters his 16th season in the AFL and his third stint with an expansion franchise. Most recently, he served eight seasons with the Grand Rapids Rampage, helping the team improve from a 3-11 mark in its expansion season in 1998 to a ArenaBowl champion in 2001. During his time in Grand Rapids, Trigg became only the fifth coach in AFL history to reach the 70-win plateau. Prior to joining the Rampage, he spent three seasons with the Milwaukee Mustangs, setting an AFL record for the biggest single-season turnaround, helping the team from 4-8 in 1995 to 10-4 in 1996. He also helped lead the Fort Worth Calvary to a playoff appearance in the first season of the franchise in 1994. Trigg also enjoyed a successful career on the field, serving as quarterback for the Detroit Drive in 1989 and 1990.
FAMILIAR FACES: Soul OL/DL Patrick Scott spent the 2001 season with the Cobras...Cobras WR/LB Sir Mawn Wilson and Philadelphia WR/DB Keith Crespina were teammates with the Tampa Bay Storm in 2002...Crespina also spent time alongside Carolina OL/DL Otis Moore with New Jersey in 2000 and 2001...Carolina WR/DB Jarrick Hillery and FB/LB Travis Reece spent time with Philly OS Tyronne Jones in Nashville (00-01) and Georgia (02-03)...OL/DL C. PLAYERS TO WATCH:
QB Rickey Foggie: The seven-year AFL veteran has been impressive in his first three starts of the season. Named as the Co-Offensive Player of the Game in the Cobras win over Philadelphia in his first start, he completed 22-of-31 passes for a season-high 338 yards and five touchdowns. He followed that up with a 22-of-30 passing performance against the Destroyers, throwing for 232 yards and six touchdowns. Foggie currently ranks among the AFL's all-time leaders in all major passing categories.
OS Damien Groce: Groce has emerged as a dangerous weapon as a receiver, rusher and kick returner this season. In 13 games, he has 68 catches for 822 yards and a single-season record 19 touchdowns, including the game-winning score in the Cobras come-from-behind win at Columbus (2/13). Groce had a career performance in his first start at offensive specialist against Philadelphia, setting career highs with eight receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns. He currently ranks 9th in the AFL with 1,735 all-purpose yards and has set Carolina single-season records for touchdowns (21) and points scored (126)
WR/DB Jarrick Hillery: The fifth-year veteran is one of the most versatile two-way players in the AFL. This season, he has made contributions on offense, defense and special teams in 2004, earning AFL Ironman of the Week honors following the Cobras victory over the Tampa Bay Storm (3/21). Thus far, he ranks among the team leaders with 28 receptions (5th), 286 receiving yards (5th), 19.2 kickoff return average (1st) and 30.5 tackles (1st).
WR/LB D.J. Humphries: The first-year player out of Presbyterian College has made an immediate impact after seeing his playing time increase over the last three games. In the contests, he has notched 18 catches for 187 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 11 tackles on defense.
SOUL PLAYERS TO WATCH:
OS Tyronne Jones: A seven-year veteran of the AFL, Jones has displayed the offensive skills necessary to lead the expansion club. Thus far, he leads the Soul with 67 receptions, 879 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns, while also emerging as a dangerous kick returner. The former Nashville and Georgia standout paces Philadelphia with 20.1 yards per kickoff return, including a 55-yard return for touchdown against the Cobras on April 17.
FB/LB Chris Ryan: Entering his fifth season in the AFL, Ryan has earned the nickname "Soul Train" with his powerful rushing and defending abilities. Ryan currently leads the Soul with 18 touchdowns scored, including 13 rushing scores. Thus far, he has compiled 104 yards rushing on 42 attempts. The Louisiana native has also posted 15.5 tackles and a team-high 2.0 sacks on defense.
WR/LB Ricky Ross: The former Grand Rapids standout has emerged as one of the most dangerous weapons in the Soul's arsenal. Ross stands second on the team with 57 receptions for 756 yards and 16 scores, as well as three additional rushing touchdowns. He has also returned 30 kickoffs for 605 yards (20.2 yds/return) and compiled 16.0 tackles from the âJack' linebacker position.

SNAKE BITES:
Ewww...Groce: Cobras OS Damien Groce has emerged as a dangerous playmaker, proving to be a force on offense and special teams. En route to setting career highs for receptions (68) receiving yards (822), Groce has also set team records for receiving touchdowns (19), touchdowns (21) and points scored (126). He had a standout performance in his first start at OS in win over Philadelphia on April 17 (8 rec., 173 yards, 3 TDs). The former New York Dragon also leads the team with 47 KO returns and 861 KO return yards and ranks 9th in the AFL with 1,735 all-purpose yards.
Pace Setters: While OS Damien Groce has already made his mark in the Cobras record books with 21 touchdowns and 126 points scored in 2004, a number of players are on pace to set a variety of single-season records if they continue on their current pace. Following is a chart of where each player currently stands, the record and the record-holder.

Change Is Good: The Cobras changes on the sidelines have resulted in a very unique stat. With the team's victory over Philadelphia on April 17, Carolina interim head coach Ron Selesky became the third coach to win his first game with the team in 2004, joining former head coaches Eddie Khayat and John Gregory. The club is 1-9 in the other 10 games this season.
Early Bird Gets the Worm: The first team to score this weekend is likely to hold a large advantage based on the Cobras' history. This season, Carolina is 4-2 when they get on the board first, but winless in seven contests when the opponents notch the first points. A similar trend can be found throughout team history â (12-17 when scoring first; 8-34 when opponent scores first).
Defensive Makeover: Following the release of DS Daryon Brutley and WR/DB Ernest Ross, the Cobras will field an all-new defensive backfield for this weekend's contest with the Soul. The tandem had previously replaced DS Glenn Davis, who was lost for the season with a shoulder injury suffered in loss to New York (4/4), and DS Damon Mason, who was waived earlier in the season. The likely replacements include Henry Baker and Fred Vinson. Baker previously spent time with the New Jersey Red Dogs in 1999, while Vinson is a former second round draft choice of the NFL Green Bay Packers.
Back in the Spotlight: Veteran quarterback Rickey Foggie has made a successful return under center after missing the 2003 season and being relegated to back-up duties for the first 10 games of the 2004 campaign. In his first start of the season, he led the Cobras to a victory over the Philadelphia Soul, completing 22-of-31 passes for a season-high 338 yards and five touchdowns to earn Co-Offensive Player of the Game honors. Foggie followed that performance by passing for a season-high six scoring tosses in the loss to Columbus.
In Their Defense: The Cobras recent struggles can be mainly attributed to their inability to limit opponents passing attacks. In dropping four of the last five games, the Cobras have surrendered over 14 yards per completion (78-of-125 for 1,115 yards), including 26 touchdown passes and no interceptions. Overall, Carolina has surrendered 60.4 points per game during the five-game stretch.
In the Zone: The Cobras have been very efficient in the red-zone throughout the 2004 season, leading the league with a 91.2 percent conversion percentage. In 57 trips inside their opponents' 10-yard line, Carolina has scored 46 touchdowns and six field goals.
Nifty Fifty: The first team to 50 points very well could be the victor in this weekend's matchup. Throughout their five-year history, the Cobras have had very little success when they are unable to post 50 points or more. At the same time, they have been most successful when holding opponents under the half-century mark.

Stepping Up: First-year WR/LB D.J. Humphries has capitalized on his first extended playing time of the 2004 season. One week after reeling in eight passes for 90 yards and his first career touchdown reception against the Philadelphia Soul, Humphries notched a team-high 6.5 tackles in the team's loss to Columbus. Last week, he added six receptions for 74 yards and a score. After only four career games, the South Carolina native has displayed skills that will be expected to be a big part of the Cobras attack following the departure of WR/LB Jack Walker Jr.
Return to Sender: Kickoff coverage continues to be a thorn in the side for the Cobras. Carolina has surrendered kickoff returns for touchdowns on six occasions this season, including a 55-yard return for a score by Philadelphia's Tyronne Jones on April 17. Overall, the Cobras special teams have allowed a league-worst 22.4yards per kickoff return, well beyond the current team record of 20.6 yards per return in 2002.
Dragons Fly South: The Cobras roster currently features six former New York Dragons, including OS Todd Doxzon, OS Damien Groce, QB Matt Nagy, OL/DL Sean Tremblay and OL/DL Cory Stone. OL/DL Robert Stewart also appeared in 28 games with the Dragons in 2001 and 2002.
On the Sidelines: Ron Selesky was promoted to the interim head coach position three weeks ago, becoming the sixth head coach in Carolina history. It marked the fourth mid-season coaching change in five seasons.

Running Uphill: Carolina continues to struggle to put together a forceful running attack, standing last in the AFL with 9.8 rushing yards per game. After posting 30 yards on seven carries (4.3 yds/carry) in the season opening victory over the Dallas Desperados, the Cobras have proceeded to record just 97 yards on 69 carries (1.4 yds/carry) over the next 12 games. FB/LB Travis Reece currently leads the team with 35 rush attempts for 76 yards and seven touchdowns.
Queen-Sized Win: Carolina put an end to a grueling, AFL-record 16-game home losing streak on March 21 with a 54-43 victory over the defending ArenaBowl champions, the Tampa Bay Storm. The Cobras special teams accounted for three touchdowns, while the defense pressured the Storm throughout the game, posting two interceptions and nine passes defended.
Nothing But Iron-man: WR/DB Jarrick Hillery was recognized as the Army Ironman of the Week for his performance against Tampa Bay on Sunday, March 21. The four-year veteran recorded two kickoff returns for touchdowns, caught three passes for 39 yards and a score and added four solo tackles and an interception on defense.
Heading In the Right Direction: Regardless of the recent struggles, this year's Cobras have seen a vast improvement over last season's squad in a number of key areas.
2004 2003
Scoring offense 47.7 34.6
Pass offense 240.8 204.8

He Roxz: OS Todd Doxzon has been the Cobras most consistent receiver throughout the 2004 campaign and is on pace to shatter many of the franchise's single-season receiving records. Thus far, he is seventh in the league with 87 receptions and tenth with 996 yards. Currently, he is two receptions shy of the single-season franchise records. Following is how he would stack up with the top pass catchers in Carolina's five-year history if he continues on his current pace.

The Making of the Cobras: The Cobras have experienced a dramatic makeover following the disappointments of the 2003 season. Only two players from last year's squad will be on the field in the tenth week, OL/DL Robert Stewart and 2003 Team MVP WR/DB Bernard Holmes. Of the 19 remaining players on the active roster, 18 were signed as free agents.
