
AFL names players of the week

NEW YORK â Arizona Rattlers quarterback SHERDRICK BONNER, Las Vegas Gladiators wide receiver/defensive back CORNELIUS BONNER and Orlando Predators wide receiver/linebacker CORY FLEMING have been named Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player and U.S. Army Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 14 of the 2004 season.
Sherdrick Bonner (6-4, 240, Cal State-Northridge), who is in his 11th AFL season, earned Offensive Player of the Week honors by leading the Arizona Rattlers (9-5) to a 58-41 victory over the AFLWA No. 1-ranked San Jose SaberCats (10-3) on Sunday. The 2003 All-Arena performer completed 20-of-31 passes (64.5 percent) for 238 yards, seven touchdowns (including his 600th career) and no interceptions. With the Rattlers down 21-10, he ran for a 1-yard touchdown and completed a 9-yard scoring pass to ORSHAWANTE BRYANT in the final 1:43 to put Arizona up 24-21 at halftime. Behind Bonner, the Rattlers used a 35-0 run to knock off the SaberCats. This marks the 15th time that the ArenaBowl VIII MVP has earned an AFL weekly honor, and his second this season (Week 11).
Cornelius Bonner (6-0, 190, Cincinnati), who is in his fourth season, helped lead the Las Vegas Gladiators (6-7) to a 63-35 victory over the Philadelphia Soul (5-8) on Saturday. Bonner, who is in his first season with the Gladiators, recorded 3.0 total tackles, one fumble recovery, one pass breakup and a team record-setting three interceptions. Bonner returned his third interception 50 yards for a touchdown to open up second-half scoring in the third quarter. This marks the first time that the former BearCat has earned an AFL weekly honor.
Fleming (6-2, 215, Tennessee) led the Orlando Predators (7-6) in all facets during their 44-40 victory over the AFLWA No. 2-ranked New Orleans VooDoo (9-4) on Sunday. The nine-year veteran recorded five receptions for 56 yards and one touchdown on offense and added four kickoff returns for 53 yards on special teams. On defense, Fleming tallied 1.0 total tackle, one pass breakup and an interception that stopped a late VooDoo drive. This marks the fourth time that the former Rookie of the Year (1997) has earned an AFL weekly honor.
Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Austin 's John Kaleo, Chicago's Raymond Philyaw, Detroit's Carl Bond, Georgia's Leon Murray, Indiana's Adrian McPherson, Las Vegas' Marcus Nash, New York's Aaron Garcia, Orlando's Joe Hamilton and Tampa Bay's Freddie Solomon.
ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Ricky Parker, Austin's Tom Briggs, Chicago's John Moyer, Georgia's Oscar Sturgis, Indiana's Ricky Hall, New York's Chuck Wesley, Orlando's Kenny McEntyre and Tampa Bay's Tremain Jones.
U.S. Army Ironman of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Hunkie Cooper, Austin's Darryl Hammond, Chicago's Bob McMillen, Columbus' Sedrick Robinson, Detroit's Curtis Eason, Las Vegas' Marlion Jackson, New York's Cosmo DaMatteo and Tampa Bay's Umar Muhammad.
