OVERVIEW: The Destroyers have gotten off to a slow start this season, finding themselves at 1-5 through six weeks of play and are coming off of a heart-breaking loss at home to the Philadelphia Soul last Saturday night. Columbus has lost five games in a row following the team's season-opening win over the Indiana Firebirds on February 7 in Indianapolis. The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Destroyers as they make their way to New York to face Aaron Garcia and the rest of the Dragons Saturday night. New York welcomes Columbus to town as a team on a roll of late, knocking off two of the AFL's top teams in consecutive weeks. The Dragons handled the previously unbeaten San Jose SaberCats two weeks ago in a 64-50 decision prior to besting the defending Arena Bowl champion Tampa Bay Storm last Sunday afternoon in Tampa by a score of 40-35. The Destroyers aim to end their five-game skid on the road, while the Dragons seek to move above the .500 mark and claim their third win in as many weeks.

THE SERIES: The Destroyers-Dragons series dates back to the 2001 season with the all-time series tied at three wins a piece. The two teams alternated wins during the 2001 and 2002 seasons with each team wining two games on their home field. Last season, the Destroyers and Dragons split two meetings with each team winning on their opponent's field. Prior to moving to New York in 2001, the Dragons played out of Des Moines, Iowa and were known as the Iowa Barnstormers from 1995-2000. The Destroyers and Barnstormers met twice with Iowa claiming victory in both meetings in 1999 and 2000. Saturday's game will be the ninth overall meeting between the two franchises.

LAST WEEK: Last Saturday night the Destroyers fell to the Philadelphia Soul by a count of 43-41 at Nationwide Arena. The loss was the second in three weeks to the Soul. The game came down to fourth and ten play with 23 seconds left in the game, Philadelphia down 41-37 and with possession. Soul QB Nick Browder connected with WR/LB Ricky Ross for the 25 yard score to go on top with 18 seconds left and the final score of the night. Destroyer QB Ryan Vena led all passers with 18 completions on 34 attempts, two touchdowns passing and two more rushing. WR/LB Sedrick Robinson added a touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, throwing a 12-yard scoring pass to OL/DL LaKendrick Jones on a flea-flicker to give Columbus a brief 34-30 lead. OS CoCo Blalock led Columbus and all other receivers with seven catches for 86 yards. WR Cornelius White was on pace with the first meeting between the two teams with five catches and 56 yards in the first half. But, following the final play of the first half White and Soul WR/DB Joseph Todd got into an altercation, resulting in White being ejected from the game. Browder lad the Soul in passing with 16 completions on 34 attempts and two interceptions, one being returned for a touchdown. Ross led the Soul in receiving with three receptions, 61 yards and a touchdown. Columbus was able to keep the game close thanks to excellent defensive play, forcing three turnovers. The first came on the first series of the game. OL/DL Wilky Bazile sacked Browder, forcing a fumble to be recovered by WR/LB Titcus Pettigrew at the Soul 19. One play later, Vena found White streaking towards the end zone for the 19 yard score. The touchdown marked the first time is season that the Destroyers were the first team to score. Columbus scored on a two-yard run by Vena around the right side with one minute left in the contest to take the lead 41-37. Browder then methodically led the Soul down the field ending in the touchdown pass to Ross. The Destroyers had a chance to win the game, but in the ensuing kickoff Blalock fumbled the ball on the four yard line, turning the ball over with 16 seconds left, ending any hope of a comeback.

NEXT WEEK: Following Saturday's game in New York, the Destroyers will be out of action, as the team will have reached their bye week. The Destroyers return to the playing field on April 4 when they welcome the Orlando Predators to Nationwide Arena.

LAST SERIES MEETING: The Destroyers and Dragons last met on May 11 of last season when New York defeated the Buffalo Destroyers, 49-30 in Buffalo. Dragons quarterback Aaron Garcia threw six touchdown passes in leading his team to victory. The Dragons went on an 18-0 run in the second half to build a 19-point lead which they would never relinquish.

MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF
Prior to the 2004 season, Destroyers wide receiver/linebacker Cornelius White might not have been mentioned among the top receivers in the Arena Football League, despite putting up solid numbers in his six-year career. Through six games this season however, White has established himself as a legitimate go-to receiver and placed himself among the league's elite receivers. Last week versus Philadelphia, White led his team in receiving yards and receptions in the first half, before being ejected from the game, gaining 56 yards on five catches with two touchdowns. Entering week seven, White has recorded 40 catches (5th in AFL) for 530 yards (5th in AFL) and 11 touchdowns (3rd in AFL).

FIRE UNDER PRESSURE
In most defensive coordinators' minds, the best way to interrupt an opposing offense is to pressure the quarterback. Last week versus Philadelphia, the Destroyers defensive line did just that, breathing down quarterback Nick Browder's neck. In the first quarter, Destroyers offensive/defensive lineman Wilky Bazile sacked Browder, forcing a fumble that the Destroyers recovered, leading the Columbus' first touchdown of the game. Bazile finished with three tackles (2 TFL), one forced fumble and one sack. The Destroyers' defense was credited with three quarterback hurries and forced Browder into two bad decisions, resulting in interceptions, one which was returned for a touchdown. It was the second time this season that the Destroyers recorded two interceptions in the same contest.

NEVER OVER ‘TILL IT'S OVER
For the third time this season, a Destroyers' game was decided in the last minute of the game. In week one, the Destroyers held off a scrappy Indiana Firebirds comeback, holding them on a fourth down attempt with only seconds left in the game to take possession and run out the clock. Week two saw the Carolina Cobras score the winning touchdown on the last play of the game to best the Destroyers 54-53 in their inaugural home opener. Last week verses Philadelphia, after taking the lead with one minute left on the clock, the Destroyers' defense could not contain the Soul receivers. The Soul marched down the field, and with 18 seconds left on the clock took back the lead in the game's winning drive to go on top 43-41.

FIRST, FIRST BLOOD
The Destroyers, for the first time this season, was the first team to score in last week's game. The score came on a 19-yard pass from QB Ryan Vena to OS Cornelius White to draw first blood. One play earlier Soul had possession until OL/DL Wilky Bazile came tearing through the line to sack Philadelphia QB Nick Browder. The hit jarred the ball loose that was scooped up by WR/DB Titcus Pettigrew and returned one yard to the Soul 19 yard line to gain possession inside the red-zone.

NOT PICKY WITH PICKS
The Columbus Destroyers has, as a team, five interceptions to its credit, all coming at the hands of five different players. WR/LB Cornelius White, DS JoJo Polk, WR/DB Ryan Sloth, WR/DB Titcus Pettigrew and DS Lavar Glover all have interceptions this season

SECOND AND THIRD QUARTER AFFLICTION
The Destroyers have been losing games just before and after half time this season. Columbus has been outscored in the second and third quarters 98-153 while only being outscored 140-138 in the first and fourth quarters. The third quarter has been particularly unkind to the Destroyers, finding themselves 33 points in the hole. Columbus has scored 22 fewer points in the third quarter than their opponents, only being outscored by four in the first and outscoring their opponents by two in the fourth.

SEEING YELLOW
In recent weeks, the Destroyers have been hampered not only by turnovers, but by too many flags flying not in their favor. The Destroyers are the second most penalized team in the AFL. In six games the Destroyers have been penalized 64 times for a total of 419 yards (69.8 yd/g). The Destroyers committed seven more faux pas for 96 more yards than the next closest team (Las Vegas). Last week they committed 16 penalties for 113 yards.

RETURN TO SENDER
The Destroyers have scored 36 touchdowns this season, six of which have come via returns. Columbus' six returns for touchdowns are currently tied for first in the Arena Football League (COL).
