Arizona Rattlers (2-2)
Date: Friday, March 5, 2004
Kickoff: 9:00 p.m.
Site: America West Arena (16,321)

Series Record: The Rattlers hold a 3-1 all-time series advantage over the Destroyers entering Friday's contest.
Last Meeting: Destroyers 49, Rattlers 45 (February 14, 2003)
Series Streaks: After dropping the first three meetings with Arizona, the Destroyers claimed their first series victory in week three of last season.
Coaches: Destroyers, Earle Bruce (1-3 in 2004, 14-19 overall). Rattlers, Danny White (2-2 in 2004, 112-52 overall).
OVERVIEW: The Destroyers enter week five of the regular season a team searching for answers. Following back-to-back losses in weeks two and three, head coach Earle Bruce opted to give backup quarterback John Rayborn the starting nod over Ryan Vena, who was the starter the first three weeks of the season. The change at quarterback reaped a similar result however as the Destroyers dropped their third game in as many weeks to the Dallas Desperados last Sunday afternoon, 51-35. With the loss Columbus fell to 1-3 on the season, which is the worst start through four games for the franchise since the 2000 campaign when the Buffalo Destroyers lost the first eight games of the season. The Rattlers welcome the Destroyers to town on a mini run, having won two games in a row entering this week's play. Arizona, one of the most storied teams in AFL history, opened up the 2004 season with two consecutive losses. The two defeats out of the gates was the first time since the 1993 season that the Rattlers began a season 0-2. However, the Rattlers were able to notch their first win of the season two weeks ago, downing the previously unbeaten Carolina Cobras in Carolina, 45-38. Arizona then claimed win number two on the season last week at home over the New York Dragons to reach the .500 mark at 2-2 through four weeks of play. The Destroyers travel out west for the first time this season looking to end a three-game slide as the Rattlers eye their third win in a row to officially begin a winning streak.
THE SERIES: The Destroyers-Rattlers series dates back to the 2000 season with Arizona claiming a 3-1 all-time series advantage over the Destroyers in four series meetings. The two teams first met in the opening round the 2000 Arena Football League postseason with the Rattlers edging the Destroyers 41-34 in Arizona. The Rattlers won the next two meetings over the course of the 2001 and 2002 seasons before the Destroyers claimed their first series win over Arizona on February 14 of last season.

LAST WEEK: Last Sunday afternoon the Columbus Destroyers sold out Nationwide Arena for the second game in a row, however were upended by the visiting Dallas Desperados, 51-35. The defeat was the team's second home loss in a row and third overall, leaving Columbus at 1-3 entering week five of the regular season. Quarterback John Rayborn was named the starter late in the week over Ryan Vena, who lined up as the Destroyers' signal caller for the first three games of the season. In the first start of his professional career, Rayborn completed 20-of-31 pass attempts for 183 yards and three touchdowns while throwing two costly interceptions on the afternoon. Destroyers wide receiver/linebacker Cornelius White continued to fill the stat box, leading the team in receiving for the third week in a row with 80 yards through the air and two touchdowns. Dallas quarterback Glen Gauntt led his team to victory for the third week in a row after completing 22-of-32 passes for 259 yards and five touchdowns. Gauntt spread the ball evenly with three receivers gaining over 65 yards on the afternoon, led by wide receiver/defensive back Will Pettis who had 86 yards on six catches. At the end of the first half with only four seconds on the clock Desperados kicker Jason Wells missed a 35 yard field goal attempt, which offensive specialist CoCo Blalock received off the net and returned the ball 51 yards for a touchdown as time expired to put the Destroyers on top 28-27 at the half. The Destroyers couldn't keep the momentum going in the second half however, getting outscored 24-7 in the game's final 30 minutes of play, including being shut out entirely in the fourth quarter. The Destroyers attempted to dig themselves out of a second half hole for the second week in a row, however fell short of a late comeback after gaining only 82 total offensive yards in the second half. Dallas sealed the Destroyers' fate with 1:42 left in the fourth quarter when defensive specialist Jermaine Jones picked off a Rayborn pass in the endzone.
NEXT WEEK: Following Friday's game in Arizona, the Destroyers return home for a rematch with the Philadelphia Soul on Saturday, March 13 at Nationwide Arena. The Soul hold a 1-0 all-time series advantage over the Destroyers after defeating the Destroyers in the two team's first-ever meeting two weeks ago in Philadelphia.
LAST SERIES MEETING: The Destroyers and Rattlers last met on Valentine's Day last year as the Destroyers tamed the Rattlers, 49-45 at HSBC Arena in Buffalo. The Destroyers got off to a quick start as defensive specialist Dwaine Carpenter picked off a Chris Hixson pass attempt on Arizona's opening possession of the game, which preceded a one-play touchdown strike from quarterback Jeff Loots to wide receiver/linebacker Cornelius White. The two teams traded touchdowns throughout the first half before Arizona took a 21-20 lead into the break. With the aid of two late Arizona turnovers, the Destroyers pulled out a closely contested game to claim their first victory over the Rattlers franchise.

THE COACHES:
Columbus â Earle Bruce, 4th season (1st with Destroyers) 1-3 in 2004; 14-19 overall
Earle Bruce returns to the Area Football League as head coach and general manager for the Columbus Destroyers. Bruce landed his first collegiate head coaching job at the University of Tampa in 1972, where he fashioned a 10-2 record, including a win in the Tangerine Bowl. He took over at Iowa State University from 1973-1978, where he guided the Cyclones to eight wins in each of his last three seasons. Bruce succeeded long-time coach Woody Hayes at Ohio State in 1979 and went on to compile an 81-26-1 record from 1979-1987 in Columbus. He led the Buckeyes to two outright Big Ten titles (1979, 1984) and two co-championships (1981, 1986) and was named the 1980 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Following his tenure in Columbus, Bruce coached at the University of Northern Iowa in 1988 before taking over the Colorado State University program from 1989-92. He led the Rams to their best season in school history, a 9-4 record that included a win in the Freedom Bowl. Bruce began his coaching career in the AFL during the 1993-1994 seasons with the Cleveland Thunderbolts. He spent the 1994-1995 seasons with the St. Louis Stampede, making theirs the best record of an expansion football team at 9 and 4 and taking them to the playoffs. In 2001 Bruce coached the Iowa Barnstormers in the AF2 League.
Arizona â Danny White, 13th season (13th with Rattlers) 2-2 in 2004; 112-52 overall
Danny White is one of the most tenured head coaches in the history of the Arena Football League, having spent the past 12 seasons as the helm in Arizona. In his thirteenth season with the Rattlers, the former AFL coach of the Year has led Arizona to four ArenaBowls and two ArenaBowl titles (1994 and 1997). White was hired as head coach/general manager in the team's inaugural season of 1992 and he has gone on to amass a 112-52 record as a head coach in the AFL. In addition to his coaching resume, White compiled an equally impressive playing career as a quarterback. A legend in the state of Arizona, White played three seasons at Arizona State University, leaving as both the school's and NCAA's all-time passing leader. He was then drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1974 NFL Draft before spending two seasons in the World Football League with the Memphis Southmen. In 1976, White joined the Cowboys. In his first year as a starter, White broke the Cowboys' single-season touchdown passing record (1980). He ended his career as the team's most accurate passer, setting Cowboys' career records for completions and touchdown passes and also still currently holds eight Cowboys' passing records.

GONE COO COO FOR COCO
Columbus offensive specialist CoCo Blalock joined the Destroyers this past offseason with hopes of spearheading the team's offensive attack. However, despite posting solid numbers through three games, Blalock has been somewhat overshadowed by the excellence of wide receiver/linebackers Cornelius White and Sedrick Robinson. Despite the loss last Sunday, Blalock had a coming-out party of sorts versus Dallas in week four. He led the team in receptions (9) and was second in yards receiving (69) with one touchdown. He also utilized his elusive speed to electrify the home crowd on special teams. Blalock returned four kickoffs for 80 yards and returned one missed field goal 51 yards for a touchdown as time expired to close out the first half. His 200 total offensive yards were for the Destroyers this season. Following his production last week, Blalock moved up into the top five in all-purpose yards in the AFL. Entering Friday's contest, Blalock is fifth in the league in all-purpose yards with 529 (132.2 yd/g) in four games played.
MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF
Prior to the 2004 season, Destroyers wide receiver/linebacker Cornelius White might not have been mentioned among the top receivers in the Arena Football League, despite putting up solid numbers in his six-year career. Through four games this season however, White has established himself as a legitimate go-to receiver and placed himself among the league's elite receivers. Last week versus Dallas, White led his team in receiving yards for the third week in a row, gaining 80 yards on seven catches with two touchdowns. Entering week five, White has recorded 29 catches (T-4th in AFL) for 375 yards (3rd in AFL) and seven touchdowns (T-4th in AFL).
SECOND HALF SLUMP
The Destroyers find themselves at 1-3 through four games this season, with the three losses coming in successive weeks. The team has dropped the past two games in large part due to lackluster second half efforts. In the past two weeks the Destroyers have been outscored in the second half 51-21, including two scoreless quarters. Despite a 26-point fourth quarter in week one at Indiana, the Destroyers have been outscored 92-72 in the second half of play this season.
PASSING ACCURACY
Columbus has used two different starting quarterbacks this year and both have proved to be on mark when it comes to hitting their targets. Quarterbacks Ryan Vena and John Rayborn have combined to complete 83-of-124 pass attempts, giving the team the fourth-best pass completion percentage in the Arena Football League (66.9). Individually, the Destroyers dress two of the top six most accurate passers in the league in Vena (54-80/67.5), who is fourth in the AFL and Rayborn (29-44/65.9), who is sixth in the AFL.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAY
Winning is a result of strong productivity in all three aspects of the game, offense, defense and special teams. To this point, the Destroyers most productive aspect of the game has been their special teams play. Entering week five of the regular season, the Destroyers are second the league in kick return yards (549) and tied for first in the league in kick return touchdowns (2). In addition, the Destroyers are fourth in the league in MFG return yards (59) for an average of 29.5 yd/ret. and are one of only two teams in the league with a MFG returned for a touchdown (Soul).
TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE
The Destroyers have scored 24 touchdowns this season, five of which have come via returns. Columbus' five returns for touchdowns are currently tops in the Arena Football League.
Interception:
2/7 at IND Cornelius White â 9 yard return for touchdown
2/7 at IND JoJo Polk â 4-yard return for a touchdown
Kick Return:
2/7 at IND Sedrick Robinson 57-yard return for TD
2/13 vs CAR Sedrick Robinson 54-yard return for TD
MFG Return:
2/29 vs DAL CoCo Blalock 51-yard return for TD
HOTTEST TICKET IN TOWN
The Destroyers have sold out both of their home games this season, with a capacity crowd of 17,171 fans packed inside Nationwide Arena in week two versus Carolina and last week versus Dallas.
