Cobras Add Bernard Holmes to Active Roster
March 2, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Carolina Cobras News Release
CHARLOTTE â The Carolina Cobras announced today that reigning Team MVP Bernard Holmes has been activated from the injured list and will join the team as it travels to square off with the Austin Wranglers this Sunday, March 7 at the Frank Erwin Center.
In other moves, the club signed former Wake Forest lineman Bryan Ray from the practice squad and activated lineman Yusuf Scott from the injured reserve list. The Cobras also placed defensive specialist Glenn Davis on the injured reserve list and waived lineman DeAngelo Lloyd.
Holmes (6-0, 172, Texas A&M-Kingsville) rewrote the Cobras record books in 2003 as he led the AFL with 240.1 all-purpose yards per game. In 11 contests, he set new franchise for touchdowns (20), 100-yard receiving games (6), kickoff returns (74), kickoff return yards (1,546) and all-purpose yards (2,641). The seven-year veteran currently ranks among the AFL's all-time leaders with 421 receptions, 5,134 receiving yards, 94 receiving touchdowns and 9,194 all-purpose yards.
Ray (6-3, 280, Wake Forest) spent the first four weeks of the 2004 season on the Cobras' practice squad after being waived following training camp. Ray most recently saw action with the Frankfort Galaxy of NFL Europe in 2002, recording 11 tackles and a sack. In four seasons at Wake Forest, he ranked second in Demon Deacons history with 21 sacks and 42 tackles for a loss.
Scott (6-4, 319, Arizona) rejoins the active roster after missing three games with a calf injury suffered in the season opener against the Dallas Desperados. The first-year lineman did not record any stats in the contest, but will be looked to provide added depth and stability to the Cobras' offensive and defensive line.
Davis (5-11, 189, South Florida) has been added to Carolina's injured reserve list after suffering a neck injury in last week's meeting with Orlando. The second-year defender has posted 16.0 tackles and a team-high three passes defended in four games in 2004.
Lloyd (6-6, 272, Tennessee) appeared in two games in 2004, recording three assisted tackles. The Charlotte-native is making his first appearance in the AFL after appearing on the roster of four NFL teams in the past two years. Lloyd began his football career at Independence High, where he was named a Parade All-American at linebacker.
The Cobras return to the Charlotte Coliseum on Sunday, March 14 in a 3:00 p.m. rematch with the Dallas Desperados. Cobras' season tickets, flex plans and group tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 877-4-COBRAS or visiting www.cobrasfootball.com.
