TAMPA BAY SEEKS FIRST ROAD WIN OF SEASON IN BIG EASY
The defending ArenaBowl champion Tampa Bay Storm travel to New Orleans to take on the expansion New Orleans VooDoo Sunday afternoon. The game is a key early season battle for both teams, as each squad tries to establish itself among the league's top tier of teams. The Storm enter the contest with a 2-2 overall record, an identical mark they had entering Week 5 of last season. Tampa Bay snapped its two-game losing streak last week against the Philadelphia Soul. Meanwhile, the VooDoo dropped a 50-30 decision last weekend in Las Vegas. The loss was the first of the season for New Orleans. The game against New Orleans marks just the second road contest of the season for the Storm, who fell to the John Kaleo-led Austin Wranglers in their first road game of the year.
SAMUELS CARRIES STORM TO 40-37 WIN OVER PHILADELPHIA
With the Tampa Bay Storm in danger of losing their third consecutive game, WR/LB Lawrence Samuels scooped a fumbled center-quarterback exchange by the Philadelphia Soul offense with 20 seconds remaining in the contest to seal a 40-37 win for the defending ArenaBowl champions. The Storm victory snapped the team's two-game losing streak and evened the Storm's overall record to 2-2. Samuels was named Offensive Player of the Game and Ironman of the Game after hauling in nine passes for a career-high 149 yards and a touchdown. He also had two tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery on defense. The Storm, who allowed an average of 63.0 points per game in their two losses, held the Soul to just 37 points. Tampa Bay forced three turnovers and got its first interception of the season. The Storm also had three sacks defensively. Offensive specialist Freddie Solomon, who entered the contest as the league's top scorer, added three more touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving.

SAMUELS RECOGNIZED BY AFL
Tampa Bay Storm wide receiver/linebacker Lawrence Samuels was named the Arena Football League's Defensive Player of the Week following his Week 4 performance against the Philadelphia Soul. Samuels, who turned in one of the top all-around performances in the league thus far this season, became the first Storm player to receive a leaguewide honor this season.
Defensively, Samuels helped the Storm hold on to a 40-37 victory, a win that snapped the Storm's two-game losing streak. Samuels finished the game with one solo and two assisted tackles. He also recovered a fumble and picked off a pass. The Tampa Bay defense stopped the Soul offense only twice in the second half of the game, and both came on turnovers that Samuels recovered. In the third quarter Samuels picked off a Nick Browder pass that led to a four-yard touchdown run by Freddie Solomon, putting the Storm in front 40-24. Then, with the Soul within three points of Tampa Bay and driving for the gamewinning score, Samuels scooped up a fumbled center-quarterback exchange by Philadelphia with 20 seconds left, securing the Storm win.
One of the top Ironmen in the league, Samuels' efforts weren't limited only to the defensive side of the ball. In fact, Samuels was named Offensive Player of the Game and Ironman of the Game by the attending media following last Sunday's win against the Soul. Samuels recorded nine catches for a career-high 149 yards offensively, including a 27-yard touchdown catch with 10 seconds left in the first half to put the Storm ahead 20- 10 at halftime. Samuels' 149 receiving yards gave him 5,262 for his career. He is now just 130 receiving yards shy of tying George LaFrance for second place all-time on the Storm career receiving yards list. Samuels already stands in second place in career receptions (418) and third place in receiving touchdowns (81).
JOINING ONE OF THE GREATS
With his interception on Sunday against Philadelphia, Lawrence Samuels tied former Tampa Bay Storm defensive specialist Johnnie Harris for second place all-time on the Storm career interceptions list. Samuels, with 18 career interceptions, is now second to only Tracey Perkins, who finished his Storm playing days with 34 career interceptions. Samuels joins some pretty elite company, as Perkins is one of just four players whose jersey number has been retired by the Storm and ranks fifth in AFL career interceptions and Harris has been a safety in the NFL since leaving the Storm in after the 1998 season.
Samuels is also tied for sixth place on the Storm's all-time pass breakups list. He has 28 in his Storm career, equaling the number recorded by Eddie Brown. He is six shy of fifth place Antoine Worthman, who had 34 in his career.
FINALLY AN INTERCEPTION
Samuels' interception on Sunday was his first of the season and the first by a Storm player in 2004. The Storm were one of the league's best in picking off passes last season, recording 22 interceptions, the fourth-most in the AFL. Comparatively, the Storm had seven interceptions through four games last season.
SPEAKING OF TURNOVERS
The Tampa Bay Storm defense forced a total of three turnovers on Sunday against Philadelphia, recovering a pair of fumbles and intercepting a pass. The Storm turned the ball over only once in the game, giving them a +2 advantage. That evened the Storm's turnover margin for the season to 0, which ranks ninth in the league. The top teams in the league in turnover margin are Carolina and Chicago, each of which has a +6 turnover margin. Not coincidentally, the two teams have a combined 6-2 overall record. This week's opponent, the New Orleans VooDoo, have a + 1 turnover margin on the season.
GETTING OFF THE LINE
If you were to point out some differences in the Storm through one quarter of the 2004 season compared to the 2003 season, one might be the lack of a consistent and dominating pass rush. Last season the Storm tied a team record with 29 quarterback sacks, a total that led the AFL. This season the Storm have not been able to display the same consistent pass rush thus far, but they did take a step in that direction last week against Philadelphia. The Storm recorded three quarterback sacks, the most in a single game this season, and now have six on the year. That total is tied for the best in the league, joining the Orlando Predators, Detroit Fury, and Los Angeles Avengers.
The Storm have been hampered a bit by injuries on the line thus far this season. Lineman Kelvin Kinney, the Storm's top returning pass rusher from last season, has played in parts of just two games this year and has yet to play an entire game. Kinney suffered a pulled groin early in training camp and played in only part of the Storm's season opener against Orlando. Kinney then missed the game against Georgia before lasting less than one quarter against Austin in Week 3. Kinney was placed on the team's injured reserve on February 25.
With Kinney out and the loss of pass rushers BJ Cohen, Al Lucas, and Troy Wilson from last year's team, the Storm have had to rely on a pass rush by committee. Nyle Wiren leads the team in sacks with 2.0 and is tied for third in the AFL. Others with sacks this season include Darion Conner, Rod Williams, Cyron Brown, and Shawn King.
Wiren's two sacks give him 10.5 for his career. He moved past former Storm lineman Pig Goff into eighth place on the Storm career sacks list, one-half sack behind current teammate Rod Williams.
Additionally, Darion Conner's sack on the first play of the game against Philadelphia gave him 10.0 for his career, a total that ranks ninth in Storm history.
Speaking of Cohen, the Storm will line up against their former teammate this Sunday. Cohen currently has one sack on the season and 5.5 tackles. Offensively, Cohen has four catches for 49 yards.
NEW FACES IN NEW PLACES
The Tampa Bay Storm used a revamped defensive secondary against the Philadelphia Soul, and the new group received mostly good reviews from head coach Tim Marcum, who expects to play with the same starting group in the defensive backfield this week against New Orleans.
Jonathon Ordway and Tramain Jones replaced Del Lee and Shea Showers as the team's defensive specialists, with Showers moving to the WR/DB position and Lee inactive. Jones finished as the team's leading tackler, recording 4.5 stops and a pass breakup. Ordway had three tackles and two pass breakups in the game.
TROUBLE EXTENDING DRIVES
The Tampa Bay Storm have struggled offensively on third and fourth downs this season, a problem that again reared its head last week against Philadelphia. The Storm were just 3-of-8 on third down conversion attempts and 0-for-2 on fourth down plays. This season the Storm rank 11th in the league on third down conversions, successful on just 13-of-27 attempts (48.1%). And on fourth downs the Storm rank last in the AFL, converting only once in seven tries (14.3%).
The Storm defense, however, has responded better to opponents' third and fourth down tries as of late. The Soul were just 1-of-6 on third down and 0-of-2 on fourth down. On the year, the Storm defense has held opponents to just 11-of-26 on third down conversions (42.3%, 4th in the AFL) and 2-of-8 on fourth downs (25.0%, 2nd in the AFL).
TOUGH TO SCORE IN THE RED ZONE
The Tampa Bay offense has found it tough to convert this season once inside the ten-yard line. The Storm are last in the league in red zone conversions, scoring just 15-of-23 times (65.2%, 13 TDs, 2 FGs). As a comparison, the Los Angeles Avengers are the best in the league, scoring on all 19 of their trips inside the red zone. Of the 19 teams in the league, 14 have scored on at least 75% of their red zone tries.
MOVING UP AGAIN
For the second consecutive week, Storm FB/LB David White has made a move up the Storm's all-time rushing list. With three rushing yards against the Soul, White eclipsed the 200-yards rushing mark as a member of the Storm and moved past Ivan Ceasar into sixth place on the all-time list. White currently has 201 rushing yards as a member of the Storm and trails fifth place Tony Jones by 29 yards. White remains tied with Basil Proctor for fifth place on the Storm's career rushing touchdowns list. Both players have 15 rushing touchdowns, three behind fourth place Tony Jones.
STILL SCORING, JUST TAKING A DIFFERENT ROUTE
Tampa Bay Storm offensive specialist Freddie Solomon proved how valuable he really is to the Storm offense on Sunday against Philadelphia. Solomon entered the game as the league's leading scorer with 10 touchdown receptions. He was held to just one touchdown catch in the game, but still found the endzone a total of three times after crossing the goal line twice on rushing plays. The rushing touchdowns were Solomon's first two of the season. He continues to lead the AFL in scoring with 78 points (13 TDs -- 11 rec., 2 rush), three touchdowns ahead of his nearest challenger.
Additionally, Solomon enters Week 5 with 22 catches for 260 yards and 11 touchdowns, giving him one touchdown reception for every two catches.
STREAK SNAPPED
Tampa Bay quarterback Shane Stafford saw his streak of back-to-back 300-yard passing games snapped against Philadelphia. Stafford threw for 233 yards in the contest, ending his bid for three straight 300-yard games. Stafford, however, remains the only quarterback in the league this season to pass for over 300 yards on more than one occasion. In fact, the 300-yard mark has only been eclipsed four times this year â twice by Stafford.
BACK IN PAY DIRT
Storm FB/LB Andre Bowden scored his first touchdown of the season against Philadelphia. The TD was his 82nd rushing touchdown as a member of the Storm, a total that is 40 better than the second-place total. Bowden has 89 career rushing touchdowns. That number ranks second in AFL history behind only San Jose's Barry Wagner. Bowden's four rushing yards on the season give him 1,240 for his career. He trails Les Barley by 142 rushing yards for the AFL's all-time lead in that category.
NO MORE EXPANSION LOSING STREAK
The Tampa Bay Storm entered last Sunday's game against the expansion Philadelphia Soul riding a two-game losing streak against expansion foes. In the previous week the Storm were beaten by the expansion Austin Wranglers. With the victory against the Soul, the Storm snapped the streak and improved to 27-6 overall against expansion teams. After this week's game against the VooDoo, the Storm still have two more games against expansion teams this season â rematches against the Wranglers and VooDoo.
BAYOU BOYS
The Storm have a pair of New Orleans natives on their roster and four players from the state of Louisiana. FB/LB David White prepped at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans and went on to have a successful career at the University of Nebraska. DS Del Lee prepped at Karr High School in New Orleans and played collegiately at McNeese St. in Lake Charles, La. OL/DL Shawn King is from West Monroe, La., and played at West Monroe High School. He played college ball at Northeast Louisiana University. His brother, Jerome, is a member of the Storm practice squad. Jerome played college football at Louisiana Tech.
SAINTS TIES
The New Orleans VooDoo are known for their high-profile owner Tom Benson, owner of the NFL's New Orleans Saints. But that won't be the only New Orleans Saints ties on Sunday. Storm OL/DL Darion Conner spent a few years at linebacker for the Saints. His best season came in 1994, when he led the Saints with 10.5 sacks. FB/LB Andre Bowden also was with the Saints, spending training camp with the club in 1994.
EARLY START
The Storm will have their earliest start of the season on Sunday, kicking off at 11:00 am local time. The time change is due to NBC's reshuffling of the TV lineup for the next three weekends while the network provides coverage of the PGA's "Southern Swing." All NBC televised games during those weeks will air at 12 noon Eastern.
ANOTHER NUMBER GOES TO THE RAFTERS
At halftime of the Storm's Week 4 game against the Philadelphia Soul, the Tampa Bay Storm retired the No. 20 worn by WR/DB Stevie Thomas. Thomas is the Storm's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. He is also second in all-purpose yards and missed field goal return yards, third in kickoff return yards and combined returned yards, fifth in interceptions, and ninth in tackles.
Thomas ranks fourth in AFL history in yards per catch, seventh in receiving yards, eighth in scoring, and eighth in receiving touchdowns.
Thomas played for the Storm from 1991-1999, winning four championships with Tampa Bay. He won a fifth championship with the Orlando Predators in 2000 and concluded his career in 2001 with the New Jersey Gladiators.
MORE MILESTONES FOR SAMUELS
Tampa Bay Storm wide receiver/linebacker Lawrence Samuels hit two career milestones in the Storm's Week 2 loss to the Georgia Force and inched closer to overtaking one of the Storm all-time greats on the team's career receiving yards list.
Samuels hauled in seven catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns against Georgia. Those numbers allowed him to eclipse 400 career receptions and 5,000 career receiving yards. Samuels is second all-time in Storm history in receptions and ranks third in Storm history in receiving yards.
HALF A CENTURY
When Clif Dell hauled in his 22-yard touchdown reception in Week One against Orlando, he recorded his tenth receiving touchdown as a member of the Storm and his 50th career receiving touchdown. Dell, in his second season with Tampa Bay, scored the touchdown against his former team and the organization for which he scored 40 of those 50 touchdowns.
Dell played with the Predators from 1999-2002, with his best career season coming in his final year in Orlando. That season he caught 76 passes for 995 yards and 22 touchdowns.
NEW FACES
Though the Storm return many of the impact players from last season's ArenaBowl champion team, there are a number of new faces on the Storm's opening night roster. Of the 29 players on the opening night roster (24-man roster and Injured Reserve), 13 of those players were not with the Storm for the ArenaBowl, including seven players who played in the game against Orlando. Those players who played last week but were not on the ArenaBowl roster include QB Shane Stafford, WR/DB Jonathan Ordway, OL/DLs Evan Pilgrim and Cyron Brown, DSs Shea Showers and Del Lee, and K Ian Howfield. Others new to the roster this season include QB Stoney Case, WR/DB Carlos James, OL/DLs Emil Ekiyor, Shawn King, and DJ Bleisath, and DS Antonio Langham.
TRUE IRONMAN
Tampa Bay Storm lineman Kelvin Kinney embodies the Ironman image that the Arena Football League has come known for. Kinney, who is one of the top pass rushers in the AFL and has become one of the Storm's top pass blockers, has spent precious little time away from the football field in the past few years.
From 2001-2003 Kinney played in 94 football games, an average of over 30 games per year. In 2001 Kinney was literally rushing the passer non-stop, beginning the year with the XFL's Las Vegas Outlaws. After 10 games with them, Kinney moved on to the AFL, where he played in 11 games for the Detroit Fury. After the Fury's season was over in July, it was on to the Canadian Football League, where Kinney played in 13 games for the Toronto Argonauts. In 2002 Kinney played in 28 games, 14 with the Fury and 14 with the Edmonton Eskimos. And in the 2003 calendar year Kinney added 32 more games played, 17 with the Tampa Bay Storm and 15 with Toronto and Edmonton of the CFL.
Kinney's year-round exploits have not slowed his production at all. In what will go down as his most successful year ever as a professional football player, Kinney recorded 6.0 sacks and won an AFL championship with the Storm in 2003 and then went north to wreak havoc in Canada. Splitting time between Toronto and Edmonton, Kinney recorded 12.0 sacks and won a Grey Cup championship with the Eskimos. The 2003 CFL championship game marked the third straight championship game that Kinney played in. He was with Edmonton in 2002 for their Grey Cup loss, then followed that performance up with back-to-back championship game wins in Tampa Bay and again with Edmonton.
SUPER TIES
The 2004 Super Bowl pitted the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers, a matchup which featured some strong loyalties among members of the Storm. Tampa Bay's roster features three of players with ties to the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. Quarterback Shane Stafford was signed by the Patriots in January 2003 and allocated to NFL Europe by the Patriots, where he played the 2003 season. FB/LB Andre Bowden enjoyed a three-year stint from 1994-96. Antonio Langham played for the Patriots in 2000 and also played under current Patriots head coach Bill Belichick while with the Cleveland Browns in 1994 and 1995. And, while not having direct ties to the two Super Bowl teams, Storm defensive specialist Del Lee played for Belichick while both were with the New York Jets in 1999. The Storm roster also features a pair of former Panthers in linemen Darion Conner and Shawn King. King was a second round draft choice by Carolina in the 1995 NFL draft, the 36th overall selection.
BACK-TO-BACK FACTS
It has proven to be extremely difficult to repeat as ArenaBowl champions, but there is a precedent for repeating, especially when Storm head coach Tim Marcum is involved. The last team to repeat as ArenaBowl champion was Tampa Bay, who under the guidance of Marcum won back-to-back ArenaBowls in 1995 and 1996. The only other team to repeat was the Detroit Drive, which actually won three straight ArenaBowl titles from 1988-90. In two of thoses seasons â 1988 and 1989 â Marcum was the Drive's head coach.
The closest a team has come to repeating as of late was the Orlando Predators, which won two titles in three seasons. The Predators claimed the 1998 and 2000 championships, with Albany downing the Predators in 1999 to avoid a repeat champion.
ARENABOWL HANGOVER?
The Tampa Bay Storm have had mixed success in the years following ArenaBowl championships. Following the team's first title in 1991, the Storm advanced to the semifinals of the playoffs, only to lose in overtime to Orlando. Following the 1993 championship, the Storm put together what was then their worst season ever, finishing 7-6 overall and exiting the playoffs after a first-round loss to Massachusetts. The Storm followed up their 1995 championship with a repeat performance in 1996, but the 1997 season saw another average campaign, as the team finished with a 9-7 overall record.
PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS
The Tampa Bay Storm placed one player on the first-ever Preseason All-AFL team and was selected to finish second in the league. The two preseason "polls" were taken by the newly-formed Arena Football League Writers Association.
Lawrence Samuels was selected as the preseason All-AFL pick at the WR/LB position. Also on the team was former Storm lineman BJ Cohen, now of the New Orleans VooDoo. The Storm placed second in the AFLWA's preseason picks as the eventual ArenaBowl champion. San Jose finished first in the voting, followed by Tampa Bay, Arizona, Los Angeles, and Orlando.
