Columbus Crew Acquires up to $100,000 in General Allocation Money from Vancouver Whitecaps FC in Exchange for Sebastian Berhalter

COLUMBUS - Columbus Crew today announced that the Club has acquired up to $100,000 in allocation money from Vancouver Whitecaps FC in exchange for midfielder Sebastian Berhalter. The Crew will receive a guaranteed $50,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) from the Whitecaps in 2022, and up to an additional $50,000 in GAM if certain performance incentives are met. As part of the trade, the Crew will also retain a portion of the fee if Berhalter is transferred abroad.

"We would like to thank Sebastian for his contributions to the Club while a member of the First Team and the Academy," said Columbus Crew President & General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. "It's important for young players to get regular MLS minutes, and ultimately we felt this trade would prove to be beneficial for both Sebastian's career and for our Club. He will always be a member of the Crew family and we wish him all the best in Vancouver."

A Crew Academy product, Berhalter signed a Homegrown contract on January 17, 2020, and made his professional debut against FC Cincinnati on July 11 during the MLS is Back Tournament. The 20-year-old appeared in nine matches (four starts) in the Crew's 2020 MLS Cup title run.

Berhalter was loaned to Austin FC for the 2021 season, where he appeared in 18 matches (five starts), registering an assist on the first goal of Austin's 3-2 win over the Houston Dynamo on August 4, 2021.

Crew players are currently training in-market at the OhioHealth Performance Center through February 6 prior to traveling to Charleston, South Carolina, for the second trip of the preseason from February 7-19.

The Black & Gold are set to open the 2022 MLS season by hosting Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Lower.com Field in Opening Match on Saturday, February 26 at 3:30 p.m. ET. Following the home opener, the Crew hits the road and travels to face the San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park on March 5 for the first away match of the season. The 2022 season will be the Black & Gold's 27th in MLS and the first full season at Lower.com Field, located in Astor Park.
