FIREFLIES SWEPT AFTER 7-4 SUNDAY LOSS: The Fireflies rallied with a two out triple and hit by pitch to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth Sunday afternoon at Salem Memorial Ballpark, but were not able to bring home the victory as they fell 7-4 to the Salem Red Sox. The bulk of Salem's offense came in a three-run fourth and a three-run sixth. All six of those runs were charged to Wander Arias (L, 2-5), although only three were earned runs. In the sixth, Karson Simas broke things open with his team already leading 4-2. The center fielder reached on an error from Daniel Vazquez and then scored after an Arias wild pitch. With Salem leading 5-2 and Jose Garcia on first with a pair of outs, Eddison Paulino ripped his third homer of the season to draw the score to 7-2. Juan Daniel Encarnacion (W, 5-3) earned his second win of the season with two perfect innings of relief work for Salem.

THE TIMES, THEY ARE A CHANGIN': The Kansas City Royals made another flurry of roster moves affecting the Fireflies active roster prior to the game today. Infielder Rubendy Jaquez has been sent up to Quad Cities and reliever Daury Cabrera was sent down to the Arizona Complex. Meanwhile, the injured Edgar Martinez went to the Arizona Complex to start his rehab assignment. To replace those players, reliever John McMillon has been activated off the development list and infielder Dayton Dooney and outfielder Jean Ramirez have been called up from Arizona. Dooney was they Royals' 2021 6th round pick out of Central Arizona College. Ramirez played 24 games for the Fireflies in the 2021 season. The Fireflies have now had each of the Royals first eight 2021 draftees play for them between the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

THE THREE AMIGOS' WEEK: Last week was a challenging one for the three high school draftees in the rotation for the Columbia Fireflies, but Frank Mozzicato, Ben Kudrna and Shane Panzini all rose to the moment to rebound from unique challenges well. As a whole, the three allowed three earned runs through 8.1 innings and fanned eight hitters along the way. That puts the groups' ERA in Salem at 3.24, which is a little more than two full points beneath the team ERA at this point in the season. We're likely to see Panzini pitch twice in next week's series vs the Augusta GreenJackets and Kudrna twice in the series vs Carolina. In other words, we'll see a lot of the young stars at Segra Park.

MAKING MY WAY DOWN TOWN: Fireflies outfielder River Town has been hot since last series against Salem, notching seven hits, including four doubles in his last five games. Since May 27, Town has a hit in eight of nine games he's played, and is 10-37 (.270) with two walks and four RBI across those nine games.

WILLIS THE WAYFINDER: After a rough 2021 season, southpaw Marlin Willis has been hitting a groove with the Fireflies in 2022. He struggled a bit to open up the season, spinning an 8.53 ERA in April, but since, has kept things under control. May was the start of something new for the lefty, who punched out 19 hitters in 12.1 innings while working a 2.92 ERA in six outings. So far in June, Willis has worked a pair of outings, each lasting one frame and he has not allowed a run to score.

NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: Following the first 48 games of the 2022 campaign, Columbia ranks 120th in batting average (.195), 120th in fielding percentage (.948) and 94th in ERA (5.28) out of 120 teams in Minor League Baseball. The pitching staff has allowed more total runs (earned and unearned) than 106 other teams this season.
