Cannon Baller Chronicle: Ballers Grind out Two Victories in Augusta

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Kannapolis Cannon Ballers are back home from a two week stretch on the road, picking up one win in Zebulon vs. the Carolina Mudcats, and most recently, two wins at SRP Park against the Augusta GreenJackets. Kannapolis has hit a rough patch, going 3-15 in their last 18 games. The team will look to change course with a home stretch at Atrium Health Ballpark this week against the Down East Wood Ducks. Here are a few notable performances from the week in Augusta:

MATH ADDS UP FOR KATH

IF Wes Kath continued his torrid stretch of offense in Augusta, hitting home runs on Friday and Saturday to add to a team-high seven hits in six games. The Scottsdale, Arizona native is currently in the thick of a six-game hit streak and has totaled a .429 batting average in four games in the month of June. Kath will look to continue his hot streak at home after being awarded Star of the Month distinction for the month of May.

KELLEY'S FOUR INNINGS, PT. 2

For the second time this season, RHP Jared Kelley tossed a clean four innings in a road start for Kannapolis. The No. 8 overall prospect in the Chicago White Sox system pitched four shutout innings Sunday, striking out two and allowing zero walks. Kelley's four innings in a single outing ties his season high set back on April 29 at Fayetteville.

WILD SUNDAY WIN

The Ballers avoided disaster in Sunday's 5-3 win, tallying three runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead despite being no-hit. Kannapolis did not have a hit until the first batter of the seventh inning when Wilber Sanchez laid down a bunt single. DJ Gladney and Victor Torres each added runs with a sacrifice fly and a solo home run respectively, giving Kannapolis much needed insurance runs. The GreenJackets attempted a comeback, but the effective pitching of Angel Acevedo and Rigo Fernandez helped the Cannon Ballers hold on to win the series finale in Augusta.

ON TO THE NEXT

The Wood Ducks enter the series with Kannapolis following a series split with the Charleston RiverDogs at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, North Carolina. Down East is 24-27 on the season, sitting at fifth place in the Carolina League North division.

Against Kannapolis, Down East contains a record of 6-6, with the two sides locked in at two series splits at both Atrium Health Ballpark and Grainger Stadium. The Woodies are 6-4 in their last 10, compared to Kannapolis' 3-7 record in their last 10 games.

The Wood Ducks hold four of the top 30 prospects in the Texas Rangers system in IF Maximo Acosta (No. 12), IF Cameron Cauley (No. 21), LHP Mitch Bratt (No. 22), RHP Dane Acker (No. 23).

Acosta is one of the youngest and most exciting prospects in Texas' organization. The 19-year-old is batting .260 with 17 RBI and 17 stolen bases. Cauley joined the Wood Ducks roster on May 10 and has made his presence felt recently by tallying two multi-hit days in four games vs. the RiverDogs. Bratt has struggled to go later into games, pitching no more than four innings in each of his outings. The 18-year-old from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada is 0-1 with a 2.84 ERA in six games. Acker has not appeared in 2022 and is listed on the 60-day IL.

The Kannapolis Cannon Ballers are back home for a six-game series at Atrium Health Ballpark versus the Down East Wood Ducks, Low-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, June 7-12. Following the set with Down East, Kannapolis will hit the road for a six-game series versus the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, Low-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, June 14-19 at Segra Stadium.
