Augusta GreenJackets News Release
COLUMBIA, SC: After twelve-straight games at SRP Park, the Augusta GreenJackets (27-25) returned to the road to face the Columbia Fireflies (15-37) who greeted rival Augusta with an offensive display as the Fireflies took the opener 8-3 at Segra Park.
Columbia jumped on the GreenJackets in the opening inning by scoring three runs with an RBI double by Carter Jensen to get it started followed by a two-run double by Omar Hernandez, taking the Fireflies' lead to 3-0.
They'd put two more runs on the board in the second inning as Carter Jensen delivered a long, two-run homer to quickly make it 5-0 Columbia after two innings.
The GreenJackets would attempt to mount a comeback by producing their first run of the night in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Cal Conley to score Mahki Backstrom and make it a 5-1 game.
The momentum continued for Augusta in the fifth as Brandon Parker sparked the offense with a solo home run to begin the inning to cut the deficit to three at 5-2. They'd manufacture another run on a second sacrifice fly by Cal Conley, scoring Mahki Backstrom from third to make it 5-3 Columbia.
But the Fireflies would deny the GreenJackets from any further rally by putting three more runs up in the bottom half of the inning on another RBI double by Carter Jensen to extend the lead back to three. A few batters later, Gary Camarillo took Columbia's advantage back to its largest of five with a two-run single to elevate the Fireflies' edge to 8-3.
Augusta was unable to get anything going the rest of the night offensively against Heribert Garcia as the right-hander for Columbia covered five total innings in relief for the Fireflies, not allowing runs in the final four as he finished off the GreenJackets with Augusta falling short by the final of 8-3.
Garcia earned his fifth win of the season for Columbia with starter Kris Anglin taking the loss for the GreenJackets.
The offense was led by Cal Conley who drove in a pair of runs with two sacrifice flies that scored Mahki Backstrom both times. Kadon Morton reach in all four plate appearances in the game with a single, double, and two walks while Brandon Parker cranked his second home run of the year to start the fifth inning.
The GreenJackets will look for revenge on Wednesday night in the South Carolina state capital with Luis Vargas taking the mound versus Luinder Avila for the Fireflies. First pitch from Segra Park is at 7:05 pm.
