San Angelo Colts News Release
LAREDO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts are probably wishing they could play the Laredo Broncos for the remaining 12 games of the regular season. The Colts (46-27), who never trailed in the three-game series, swept the Broncos (36-42) after a 6-3 win Monday night, and finished the season series with 14 wins in 18 meetings against Laredo.
For the second time in the series, the Colts' starting pitcher was provided a 2-0 lead before ever taking the mound. After Broncos starter Andy Schon (8-4) retired the first two batters of the game, Jose Torres doubled, giving Andres Rodriguez a chance in the first. The Colts first baseman, who is hitting over .600 in his last 10 games, continued his torrid pace by crushing a two-run homer to left, his 17th of the year. Rodriguez, the league's RBI leader with 88, was 6-for-13 with four RBIs in the series.
The Broncos came as close as they would all night in the third, scoring a run on an RBI single by Luany Sanchez to make it 2-1. Starter Chris Weast (2-0) allowed just four hits after that though, and picked up his second pro win. The right-hander allowed only that one run on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 6 2/3 innings.
San Angelo got that run back, plus three more, in the fourth, frustrating the Broncos to the point where they lost their starting catcher and manager. With two out and Torres at second, Jason Landreth singled to left field. Dwayne White made a solid throw from left, creating a close play at the plate, but Torres dove in headfirst, touching home plate with his left hand ahead of a swipe tag by Sanchez. Home plate umpire Kate Sargeant then ejected Sanchez for arguing and also ejected manager Dan Shwam, who came out to argue. When play resumed, Wyn Diggs, who had three hits, singled to right field, putting two men on base for Joe Rhomberg, making his third start of the series and appearing in just his 10th game of the year. Rhomberg, who played excellent defense all series long, showed off his bat as well, blasting his first homer of the season, a three-run shot to left, making it 6-1. All six runs scored by the Colts, as well as their five runs on Sunday, came with two out.
That was enough offense for the Colts, although the Broncos surged late with one run in the eighth and one more in the ninth. Luke Massetti gave up the run in the ninth but closed out the game, finishing all three games of the series and earning two saves in the first two games. Schon took the loss, hurling eight innings, allowing six runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Laredo did bring the tying run to the plate in the eighth, trailing 6-2 with the bases loaded and two out, but lefty Brian Wilburn induced Sean Gamble to ground into an inning-ending fielder's choice.
The Colts return home for a quick homestand against the Harlingen WhiteWings, beginning on Tuesday, August 5. Before the 7:05 p.m. CT game, the Colts will host their final Youth Clinic of the year, sponsored by Walmart and KSAN. Advertising, ticket, and group information are available by calling the box office at (325) 942-6587. All Colts games are broadcast live on "Cool 100" - KCLL 100.1 FM and online at the Colts' official website, www.sanangelocolts.com, which is updated daily with the latest team news.
