San Angelo Colts News Release
LAREDO, Texas - Half of Santo Hernandez's losses this season have now come against the San Angelo Colts, as the Colts beat the league's ERA and strikeout leader on Sunday night for the third time this year. San Angelo hung on for a 5-4 win, taking the first two of this three-game series and clinching their sixth series of the season versus Laredo. The Colts, who haven't trailed in this series, are also 13-4 against the Broncos this year.
After Hernandez (7-6) and Colts starter Frank James (5-5) held the teams scoreless through the first two innings, San Angelo grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third. Bryan Frichter led off the frame with a bunt single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by John Anderson, and moved to third on a groundout to second by Jose Torres. Andres Rodriguez then picked up his league-leading 86th RBI, blooping a single to center to score Frichter. Rodriguez scored when the next batter, Aaron Cone, rocked an RBI triple right down the line off the right-field wall, making it 2-0.
Laredo tied the game in the fourth with two runs off James, who picked up his second straight win, on three consecutive two-out singles by Dwayne White, Arnoldo Ponce, and Matt Imwalle. But James stranded the bases loaded when Josue Gonzalez hit into a fielder's choice, which second baseman Joe Rhomberg handled nicely after it bounced high on him.
San Angelo regained the lead in the sixth, Hernandez' final inning of work, as Jason Landreth walked to lead off the inning. Wyn Diggs singled with one out, putting two runners on for Charley Belew, who flied out. But the Colts scored three more two-out runs as Frichter took Hernandez deep to left-center for a three-run bomb, his 12th homer of the year.
Laredo made it 5-3 in the sixth as Ponce hit a solo home run to left, the final hit James gave up in 5 2/3 innings of work. Overall, the lefty allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Miliade Venas and Robert Romero, making his San Angelo debut after being added to the roster yesterday morning, combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings to bridge the gap to closer Luke Massetti, who picked up his second save in as many nights.
Imwalle doubled to begin the bottom of the ninth and scored on an RBI single by Ben Tinius to make it a 5-4 game. But then Massetti retired the next three, including the first of the three, Josue Gonzalez, who popped out trying to bunt Tinius over.
The Colts conclude this three-game series in Laredo at 7:30 p.m. CT on Monday, August 4. The Colts return home for a quick homestand against the Harlingen WhiteWings, beginning on Tuesday, August 5. Before the 7:05 p.m. CT game, the Colts will host their final Youth Clinic of the year, sponsored by Walmart and KSAN.
