Aces pound 'Wings

Harlingen Texas - August 4, 2008 - The Alexandria Aces used their power to beat the Harlingen WhiteWings 10-2 at Harlingen Field Monday. Bryan Sabatella led off the game with a home run. Sabatella lined his 13th homer of the year down the left-field line to put the Aces ahead 1-0. Nichols added his 11th homer of the year, second as an Ace, in the fifth. The solo shot was an opposite-field homer to left to give Alexandria a 5-2 advantage. Homy Ovalles hit his homer in the sixth. Ovalles smashed a two-run shot to left to make the score 7-2 in the Aces' favor. The Aces added three runs in the third. Selwyn Langaigne hit a ground-rule double to left to bring home Eddie Fitzpatrick and put runners on second and third. Brian Nichols followed with a two-run single to center to give the Aces a 4-0 lead. Aces starter Ramon Portillo pitched his fifth straight quality start. He worked seven innings and giving up just four hits and two runs, one earned. He struck out three and walked three for his eighth win. The benches cleared for the second time in the series. In the top of the eighth, Harlingen reliever Bobby Darling hit Alexandria designated hitter Larry Bethea with the first pitch of his at bat. Saturday, Bethea was hit by Darling, which prompted both benches to clear. However, no punches were thrown. That was not the case Monday. After Bethea was hit by the pitch, he charged the mound with both Bethea and Darling throwing punches at each other. They were both thrown out of the game along with Harlingen reliever Brian Daly and Alexandria reliever Wayne Hedden. The Aces travel to Edinburg to take on the Coyotes for a three-game series starting Tuesday. The Aces will throw Alejandro Martinez against the Coyotes' James Mondesir. Game time is 7:05.
