Colts Suffer Their First Loss

Abilene, Texas --- First baseman Matt Thompson's walk off RBI ground out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave hte Abilene Prairie Dogs a 3-2 victory, and handed the San Angelo Colts their first loss of the 2012 season Monday night at Walt Driggers Field.

With one out in the ninth and runners on the corners, Thompson chopped the ball to Colts' second baseman Adam De La Garza. De La Garza's only play was to first base, and Abilene shortstop Wilson Batista scored the winning run.

Batista led the inning off with a single and reached third on right fielder Gunner Glad's one-out base hit.

Reliever Chris Weast (0-1) made his season debut for San Angelo in the ninth and suffered the loss. He allowed two hits and struck out one batter in 2/3 of an inning.

Abilene reliever Scott Vander Weg (1-0) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, and earned the win.

Both starting pitchers turned in exceptional performances, but they each took a no decision. Brian Henschel allowed two runs on six hits through seven innings and struck out five. Prairie Dogs' starter Adam Rowe allowed two runs on six hits, and had a season-high 12 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.

The Colts return to Foster Field Tuesday evening to play game three of this home and home series against the Prairie Dogs. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and gates open at 6:05 p.m. It will be the first Budweiser $2 Tuesday of the season.
