San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts announced today several roster moves that feature three new players to San Angelo and four players leaving the active roster. The Colts have acquired RHP Billy McKinney and LHP Alex Merricks in a trade for future considerations with the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League, and have also signed IF Robert Mendoza. San Angelo traded RHP Brian Daly and LHP Brandon Kling to the Harlingen WhiteWings for future considerations in addition to placing IF John Beal and RHP Caleb Rodgers on the Inactive List.
McKinney and Mendoza each made his San Angelo debut last night at Foster Field in the series opener against the Laredo Broncos, a 12-4 Broncos win. McKinney threw four solid innings of relief, allowing three runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout. Mendoza replaced John Anderson at second base in the eighth inning and grounded out in his only at-bat.
McKinney, from Loveland, Ohio, is in his second professional season after beginning his career with Gateway last year. With the Grizzlies in 2007, the 23-year-old was 1-2 with a 4.34 ERA in 15 appearances, including two starts. In 37 1/3 innings, McKinney struck out 28 and walked just eight.
Merricks was drafted out of high school by the Minnesota Twins in the fourth round (122nd overall) of the 2002 amateur draft. He played three seasons-from 2002 through 2004-with the Gulf Coast League Twins (Rookie). The left-hander was 2-2 in 38 appearances, including three starts, in his time with the Twins. After not playing for three seasons, he resumed his pro career with Gateway this season, going 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 5 relief appearances. Mendoza, signed as a free agent, is in his third professional season after playing with Sioux City (American Association) in 2006 and El Paso (Central League) in 2005.
Daly, the Colts' closer who was in his first season with the Colts and fourth pro season overall, was 0-3 with a 10.80 ERA in 15 games, the most appearances by any pitcher in the league. Kling was 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA in seven appearances, one as a spot starter. In 16 innings, he allowed 16 runs, all earned, on 23 hits with seven walks and 11 strikeouts. Beal has a .200 batting average with seven RBIs in 16 games this season with the Colts, which is his second year with San Angelo. Rodgers is 2-0 with a 4.67 ERA in four appearances, three of them starts, but missed a start two weeks ago with an injured arm, which has now led to his placement on the Inactive List. The Colts also released OF Daniel Ochs, who was on the Inactive List.
