San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - Luke Massetti had his third straight excellent start, stifling the Laredo Broncos to the tune of one run on four hits in seven plus innings, as the San Angelo Colts took advantage of two Broncos errors to score three unearned runs in a 5-1 win in front of 1,903 fans at Foster Field.
Massetti (3-0) did not allow a baserunner until there was one out in the fifth, when Santiago Guerrero singled up the middle. It was the second straight game that the righty had flirted with a no-hitter in the fifth, after his complete game, one-hit shutout against Edinburg last Thursday. He struck out eight Broncos, including four in a row in the second and third innings After starting the year with three no-decisions, he has won three straight starts, going at least seven innings in all of them.
The Colts (14-12) scored first for the first time since that 11-0 win over the Coyotes last Thursday, getting an unearned run in the second off Santo Hernandez (4-1), who took his first loss of the season after winning four straight starts. After Benny Craig started the frame with a single and Aaron Cone struck out, Jose Torres singled to left. Wyn Diggs then hit a grounder to short, which was fielded cleanly by Arnoldo Ponce, but when he flipped the ball to second, Torres slid into Matt Lawman, who dropped the throw for an error. That allowed Charley Belew's fly ball to center to score Craig from third for the first run of the game.
With two outs, San Angelo got another unearned run in the fourth. With Diggs at second, Belew hit a pop-up to the left side that Ponce dropped, allowing Diggs to score. Pendergrass followed with a single up the middle to bring home Belew and give the Colts a 3-0 lead.
Massetti did not allow a runner past second base until Edgard Clemente homered to lead off the seventh. But the Colts got two back in the bottom of the seventh on three straight hits from John Anderson, Bryan Frichter, and Andres Rodriguez.
Justin Robinson relieved Massetti in the eighth with a runner on, and worked an inning, again allowing no runs (for the 10th time in 11 appearances) and no hits. Miliade Venas made his home debut as a Colt and pitched a scoreless ninth, working out of a second and third, one-out jam.
Laredo (13-12) had leapfrogged past the Colts last night in the ULB standings but San Angelo flip-flopped back into second place with their win tonight.
Notes: Massetti tied Logan Williamson for the Colts lead in wins, with three...Pendergrass and Rodriguez each extended their streaks of reaching base to 23 consecutive games...San Angelo will play its eighth rubber match in nine series in the finale Tuesday night. The only time the Colts did not split the first two games of a series was their sweep of Edinburg last week...San Angelo is 3-4 in its first seven rubber matches...Robinson lowered his team-leading ERA to 0.84.
