Barrie Colts News Release

For the second time in four days and the final time this season, the Barrie Colts met the Peterborough Petes on the ice. In their previous meeting a short time ago on Saturday in Barrie, the Colts took it to the Petes and earned their 42nd win of the season, 7-3. Tuesday night, the Colts traveled to the Peterborough Memorial Centre, looking to take the season series between the two squads.

The Colts grabbed an early lead, scoring two first period goals, but couldn't produce anything in the second period, and gave up four unanswered goals in the last two frames, falling to the Petes by a score of 4-2.

In the opening two and half minutes, Sadowy would put home his 43rd goal of the season. After DiTomaso fired a shot on net, James was able to bat away at the initial rebound, but Sadowy came in the slot and found the loose puck, putting it home to get the Colts on the board.

It would take most of the remainder of the period before the Colts would extend their lead, as they would score with 17 seconds remaining. Labanc would feed a breaking DiTomaso, and DiTomaso would make no mistake, absolutely sniping on Petes goalie, Matthew Mancina.

In the middle frame, the Colts nearly had a 3-0 lead midway as Andrew Mangiapane seemingly put home his 51st goal of the season. However, after the goal was reviewed, it was disallowed as it was deemed Mangiapane kicked the puck in the goal.

The only goal of the second period would come from the Petes just past the halfway mark. Josh Coyle fired a shot on Ovsjannikov, and after making the initial save, Ovsjannikov wasn't able to stop Daniel Nikandrov who was driving with the rebound. Josh Maguire had the second assist on the Petes first goal.

The third period would see the Petes jump right back in the game early. Only 2:10 into the final frame, Greg Betzold would net his 42nd goal on the season when he beat Ovsjannikov. Kyle Jenkins and Eric Cornel had the assists on the game-tying goal.

Only a minute and a half later, the Petes would get an odd man break, forcing Colts defenseman Cameron Lizotte to dive to take down the Petes forward who was in on a break. During the ensuing man-advantage for the Petes, Jonathan Ang would only need 8 seconds to take advantage and give the Petes their first lead of the game. After Ovsjannikov stopped Dominik Masin's shot, Ang was able to rip the rebound top shelf for his 21st goal of the season, and ultimately the game winner. Logan DeNoble also assisted on the game-winning goal.

Despite their best efforts, the Colts got themselves into penalty trouble in the second half of the third period and were unable to claw back after giving up three goals. In the late minutes of the game, the Colts best chance came from the league leading goal scorer, Kevin Labanc. When the Colts were shorthanded with three minutes to play, Labanc was sprung on a breakaway and nearly beat Mancina glove side. However, Mancina came up with a clutch save, keeping his team in the lead.

In the dying seconds of the game, the Petes would solidify their win over the Colts when Eric Cornel scored an unassisted empty net goal. It was Cornel's 27th goal of the season.

The Colts would outshoot the Petes 36-33 through 60 minutes. Peterborough was able to make good on one of their five power play chances, while the Colts weren't able to score on their lone man advantage.

Wednesday night the Colts are back at it when they continue their road trip and end in the nations capital to take on the 67's. Saturday night, the Colts return home to the BMC to play their final regular season home game before heading out to face the North Bay Battalion on Sunday to wrap up the season.
