San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas --- The San Angelo Colts and McAllen Thunder split a doubleheader Thursday night at Foster Field. San Angelo took game one, 8-3, but lost game two, 5-4.
Colts' starter Corey Frerichs (3-1) pitched a complete game in game one. He allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out eight batters in seven innings for the win.
At the plate, the Colts scored in each of the first three innings. A wild pitch and a balk allowed two runs to score in the bottom of the first. Second baseman Jon Dziomba then hit an RBI single in the second inning to give the Colts a 3-0 lead.
San Angelo then scored five runs in the third. Dziomba, third baseman Jordan Marks, and catcher Tyler Wagner each had RBI hits that inning. Wagner's was a bases-loaded double that scored all three runners.
McAllen starter Steven Romero (2-3) settled down and pitched three shutout innings to end the ballgame, but the damage had already been done. Despite two runs from the Thunder in the sixth inning, the Colts cruised to a game one victory.
In game two, a four-run fifth propelled the Thunder to the win. Second baseman Jacinto Cipriota hit a two-RBI triple and scored on a throwing error that inning. Cipriota, third baseman Andy White, shortstop Jorge Bishop, and centerfielder Cody Bishop all scored.
Colts' third baseman Jordan Marks hit two home runs, including a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh. They were his third and fourth homers of the year. Despite Marks's effort the Colts never recovered from allowing four runs in a single inning.
Colts' starter Steve Merslich (1-1) allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits in five innings for the loss. Thunder starter Ernesto Verrier (2-3) earned the win, surrendering just two runs, one earned, on three hits in four-plus innings of work. Reliever Yunier Colon recorded his second save, despite allowing two runs in the seventh.
The Colts are now 15-12, while the Thunder are 11-16. This series concludes Friday night at Foster Field.
It will be Rally Towel Giveaway Night, sponsored by AEP Texas. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Colts' Rally Towel, courtesy of AEP Texas. Gates open at 6:05 p.m., and first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
