Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox won in dramatic fashion as they defeated the Nashville Sounds 6-5 on Tuesday evening at Security Service Field in front of 3,751 fans.

In the third, Sox starter Marc Kaiser lost his control as he proceeded to walked the first four batters he faced to make the score 1-0. Charles Thomas then hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to make the score 2-0. The final run of the inning scored when Andy Abad popped out to Ian Stewart who made an amazing diving catch and fell over the third base fence which allowed the runners to advance a base and score the third run.

The Sox cut into the lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Seth Smith to make the score 3-1. After Sean Barker led off the inning with a strikeout, Joe Koshansky singled and then moved to third on a single by Edwin Bellorin before trotting home on the Smith fly ball.

Colorado Springs scored an odd run in the sixth to make it 3-2. With one out, Barker singled and moved to third on two consecutive passed ball by knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Koshanksy then singled in Barker before trotting home on a two-run homer by Bellorin making the score 4-3. The Sox tacked on one more run in the inning after Smith doubled and moved to third on a groundout and walked home on a wild pitch.

The Sounds tied it up at five all in the seventh when the first three batters reached on hits. Ozzie Chavez singled to leadoff and scored on a RBI triple by Chris Barnwell. Barnwell then scored on a pinch-hit single by Brad Nelson.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Sox won in unusual if not dramatic fashion. Sounds reliever Dennis Sarfate, who had pick up the loss in his two previous appearances, walked Cory Sullivan to leadoff the inning. Clint Barmes moved Sullivan over to second with a sacrifice bunt and Sarfate intentionally walked Stewart to put runners at first and second with one out. Sarfate struck out Barker for the second out but walked Koshansky to load the bases. Then with Alvin Colina batting, Sarfate threw a wild pitch to the backstop and allowed Sullivan to scamper home for the winning run.

The late inning dramatics made a winner of Ryan Speier (1-1) and tagged the loss on Sarfate (1-3). Tomorrow's Math Day game begins at 10:35 AM and will feature RHP Bobby Keppel (0-1, 6.43) versus RHP Tim Dillard (0-2, 3.41).
