Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox edged out the Sacramento River Cats by the score of 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Security Service Field in front of 5,718 fans. Mike Gallo (1-4) picked up the win in relief of Ubaldo Jimenez and Brad Ziegler (0-1) took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run late in the ballgame. Ryan Speier pitched a perfect ninth to notch his 12th save of the season. The come-from-behind victory was the second in a row for the Sox over the River Cats.
Sacramento walked their way to a four-run inning in the third as Jimenez lost his command. Lloyd Turner started the inning off with a double and Mark Kotsay and Kevin Melillo walked to load the bases. Jason Perry then lifted a bloop single to center to plate the first run and Daric Barton drove in the second with a fielder's choice groundout. Nick Blasi, who came in hitting .455 against the Sox, drove in a run with a groundout and JD Closser doubled to left field to plate the final run of the inning.
In the bottom of the third, the Sox got three of the runs back. Cory Sullivan led off with a single and Jayson Nix walked before Clint Barmes sacrificed them to second and third. Omar Quintanilla made the sac bunt payoff as he ripped a two-run double down the right field line. Ian Stewart singled to move Quintanilla to third and Sean Barker reached on a error by the third baseman to plate the final run of the inning.
The Sox tied it up in the fifth with the aide of an error, their second, by the River Cats. Barmes led off with a single and one out later Stewart single to right on a hit-and-run and as Barmes hit third the right-fielder Perry bobbled the ball and allowed him scamper home to make it 4-4.
Colorado Springs took the lead for good in the seventh off of a pair of relievers. Zielger started the inning for Sacramento and got a quick out before giving up a single to Quintanilla. Ziegler got the second out but then hit Barker with a pitch before being lifted for reliever Alec Zumwalt. The River Cats right-hander proceeded to give up a single to Koshanksy that was lined through the right-side of the shifted over infield to drive in Quintanilla.
The series finale is set for tomorrow afternoon as RHP Marc Kaiser (3-1, 4.66) takes the hill for the Sox against RHP Brad Knox (0-2, 3.03). Game time is set for 12:35 PM.
