Portland Beavers News Release
LAS VEGAS - Pete Laforest belted a go-ahead grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning and recorded his third multi-homer game of the season to lead the Portland Beavers to a 10-9 victory over the Las Vegas 51s Sunday afternoon at Cashman Field.
The Beavers (22-27) managed to come from behind to take a 6-5 lead after seven innings, but the 51s (23-26) rallied for three in the eighth to go up by two.
With Portland down to its final strike with the bases loaded in the ninth, Laforest took Matt White deep with a clout that gave Portland a 10-8 lead. He earlier had a solo shot in the sixth, and the Beavers rallied for three runs in the seventh to erase a 5-2 deficit. Laforest leads the Beavers with nine home runs and has eight home runs over his last 10 games.
The Beavers set the table for Laforest with a double from Mike Sansoe, a single from Vincent Sinisi and a walk by Craig Stansberry.
Leo Rosales gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth but managed to strike out Matt Kemp with the tying run on third base for his league-leading 14th save, giving the Beavers a 2-1 lead in the series. Rosales has converted all of his save opportunities this season.
Mitch Jones continued his heated ways for the 51s, belting his 14th home run as part of the eighth-inning rally that put Las Vegas up by two. Jones has homered in four straight and is 8-for-10 with three home runs, eight RBIs, four walks and six runs scored in the series with Portland.
James Loney was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the 51s, who stranded 12 base runners to up their series total to 35 men left on base.
Josh Howard drove in two runs for the Beavers, including an RBI single that gave them their first lead in the seventh inning. In just his second Triple-A game, Sansoe was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Reliever Andrew Brown (2-2) gave up three eighth-inning runs but was credited with the win. Eric Hull (2-2) received the loss.
Las Vegas built its lead to 5-2 with an RBI single from Luis Maza in the third, and a run-scoring sac fly from Jones and an RBI single by Delwyn Young in the fourth.
The two teams conclude their series Monday at 12:05 p.m.
