Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - The Colorado Rapids announced today that the club has signed midfielder Cole Bassett to a three-year contract extension through the 2024 MLS season. Additionally, the Rapids have transferred Bassett to Dutch side Feyenoord Rotterdam on an 18-month loan with an option to purchase. As part of the purchase terms, Colorado would retain a percentage of any future transfer fees for Bassett.
"We're incredibly proud of Cole for having earned this opportunity to pursue his dream of playing in Europe," said Pádraig Smith, Colorado Rapids Executive VP & General Manager. "It's a testament to his talent, his performances here with the Rapids and his dedication to continually improve as a player. This move also reflects our steadfast commitment to develop young players and provide a pathway to the highest levels of the game. We look forward to seeing Cole's continued growth and wish him all the best as he takes this next step in his career.
Bassett, 20, made 72 appearances in Burgundy, recording 13 goals and 11 assists since making his professional debut with the Rapids on Sept. 8, 2018. The Littleton, Colo., native is a product of local youth side Colorado Rush and joined the Rapids Academy in 2017 before signing a Homegrown Player contract with the club in August 2018 at age 17, then the youngest signing in Rapids history. At the time, he set additional records as the youngest player in club history to make his professional debut and score a goal.
At the international level, Bassett recently earned his first call-up with the U.S. Men's National Team, scoring the game-winning goal in 1-0 friendly win over Bosnia & Herzegovina on December 18, 2021.
Founded in 1908, Feyenoord has been one of the most successful teams in the Netherlands, winning 15 league titles and 13 KNVB Cups, along with one European Cup, two UEFA Cups and one Intercontinental Cup.
