January 20, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Los Angeles FC News Release
The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) announced today that the Club has acquired goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau from the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in exchange for $1 million in General Allocation Money (GAM), plus a natural first round pick in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft and conditional GAM if certain performance metrics are met. Whitecaps FC will receive $250,000 in 2022 GAM, $250,000 in 2023 GAM and $500,000 in GAM between 2023, 2024 and/or 2025. Vancouver also will retain a percentage of the transfer fee if Crépeau is moved to an international club.
"We are thrilled to add a goalkeeper of Maxime's quality to our roster," LAFC Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington said. "We consider Maxime to be one of the top goalkeepers in MLS. Like us, we know he is committed to winning, and his leadership and experience will contribute to our success on the field."
Crépeau, 27, joins LAFC after a stellar 2021 season with the Whitecaps, that saw him record a career-high six shutouts in 27 appearances and register a 75% save percentage en route to being named the Whitecaps FC Player of the Year. He was also recognized as the team's Player of the Year in 2019.
A member of the Canadian National Team, Crépeau has made 14 appearances for Canada and is currently with the Canadian squad as they prepare for World Cup qualifying matches.
A native of Candiac, Quebec, Crépeau started his career in the Montreal Impact Academy, making his MLS debut in 2017 against the New York Red Bulls. Crépeau appeared on loan for Montreal's USL affiliate, the Ottawa Fury in 2018, where he made USL history - setting a new record with 15 shutouts in a single season. He was named the USL 2018 Goalkeeper of the Year and to the USL All-League First Team before Montreal traded him to Vancouver prior to the 2019 MLS season.
Crépeau made a total of 57 MLS regular season starts with Vancouver in his career, including one Playoff game and three Canadian Championship matches. He missed the majority of the 2021 season due to a fractured thumb suffered during the MLS Is Back Tournament. Overall, in his MLS career, Crépeau has appeared in 60 regular season games, playing 5,368 minutes and recording 12 shutouts.
