Arkansas Travelers News Release
Wolff Stadium, San Antonio, TX - Mike Collins knocked in the winning run with a single in the tenth inning giving the Travs a 4-3 victory over San Antonio on Sunday. The win snapped a short two-game losing streak and improved the Travs to 3-2 on their current road trip. Starting pitcher RHP Bobby Mosebach combined with winner LHP Doug Brandt (2-1) and RHP Kevin Jepsen (8th save) to hold the Missions scoreless over the last eight innings.
Mosebach gave up two runs in the first inning on a double by Craig Cooper, but the Travs tied the game on back-to-back homers from DH Ben Johnson (10) and 3B Corey Smith (8) in the second to tie the game.
San Antonio C Jose Lobaton hit a double in the second inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Drew Macias giving the Missions a 3-2 lead. Mosebach buckled down after and finished seven innings allowing three runs on five hits in a no-decision.
San Antonio LHP Steve Garrison held the lead through the fifth then his fielders let him down allowing the Travs to tie the game. Leading off the sixth inning Hainley Statia reached base when SS Sean Kazmar misplayed his hard grounder for an error. Collins followed with a bouncer back to Garrison and he wheeled and threw to second base. No Missions infielder was covering at second, but Jon Schemmel was backing up behind the base. A one-out infield single by Smith loaded the bases and Garrison walked Jordan Czarniecki to force in the tying run.
RHP Jon Ellis got out of the jam with two strikeouts.
Brandt replaced Mosebach in the eighth inning and tossed two scoreless frames. San Antonio had RHP Greg Burke on the mound for the eighth and the Travs couldn't get much going against him until the tenth inning.
Adan Greenberg opened the tenth with a bunt towards third base. 3B Seth Johnston barehanded and threw wildly to first base moving Greenberg to second. Statia bunted Greenberg to third base and the Missions moved the infield up. Collins poked his RBI single through the right side for a 4-3 lead.
Jepsen retired the first two Missions hitters of the tenth inning then allowed two singles to move the tying run to third base. Chad Huffman's fly ball to center ended the game.
Time of game was 3:11 and the paid attendance was 3,271.
NOTES: The Travs are 4-4 in extra inning games...The winning run scored off Burke ended his scoreless innings streak at 21...The back-to-back homers by Johnson and Smith were the Travs' first of the season...
The Travs wrap up their six-game road trip on Monday with a special 12:05 p.m. first pitch. RHP Dan Denham (3-4, 3.02 ERA) will throw for the Travs while the Missions counter with RHP Mike Ekstrom (2-3, 7.31 ERA).
