Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Clayton Mortensen pitched eight shutout innings and Allen Craig homered as Springfield beat Corpus Christi 4-1 Sunday night at Whataburger Field before 7,763.

Springfield is 22-27 and has won five of its last six. The Hooks, 25-24, have lost nine of 13.

Mortensen (3-3) permitted three hits, all singles - one by Drew Sutton to lead off the contest and two by Tommy Manzella. Sutton was erased on the first of three double plays turned by the Cardinals.

Mortensen threw 93 pitches, 60 for strikes. He walked one and struck out five in his 10th start of the season.

Hooks starter Sergio Perez (2-2), forced to leave the game during a plate appearance in the third inning, had difficulty from the start. He was roughed up for four runs on nine hits. In an attempt to bunt a pitch from Mortensen, Perez was struck on the thumb of his right (pitching) hand.

The Cardinals took a quick 2-0 lead and added lone runs in the second and third. Jon Jay doubled to left with one out in the first and Craig followed with his 11th home run of the season.

Mortensen and Casey Rowlett contributed RBI singles during the next two frames.

Jose Oyervidez and Sean Walker combined for six innings of shutout relief for Corpus Christi.

The Hooks averted a shutout on Ole Sheldon's fourth home run of 2008 in the ninth off Jonathan Mikrut.

Springfield's Tyler Herron (1-2) faces Tip Fairchild (0-1) Monday in the series finale. It's a special 1:05 start time for Memorial Day.
