Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals picked up their fifth win in their last six games, taking down Corpus Christi for a second straight night, winning 4-1 at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi.

Cards' starter Clayton Mortensen won his second straight decision, allowing just three hits over eight scoreless innings.

Springfield fell just three outs shy of a second straight shut-out, but pinch hitter Ole Sheldon took Jonathan Mikrut's first pitch in the ninth out for his fourth home run, Corpus Christi's first run in the series.

Allen Craig belted a two-run homer in the first inning to put the Cards up 2-0, his team-leading 11th of the year.

Springfield would add one in the third and another in the fourth inning against Corpus Christi starter Sergio Perez (2-2).

Clayton Mortensen's first RBI as a professional brought home Casey Rowlett in the second, as Mortensen's RBI single made it 3-0.

Rowlett delivered his second hit of the game in the third, chasing home Steven Hill for a 4-0 lead.

That would be plenty for Mortensen (3-3), who didn't allow a single base-runner to reach second over his eight innings.

Jonathan Mikrut's first pitch of the ninth inning was taken out by Corpus Christi's Ole Sheldon, making it 4-1. Mikrut retired the final three batters to give Springfield a 4-1 mark through the first five games of the six-game road trip.

Springfield (22-27) is still four games back of first place in the North Division. The Cards send Tyler Herron (1-2) to the mound, looking for his second straight win on Monday afternoon. Corpus Christi will go with right-hander Tip Fairchild (0-1), who will make just his second career start in the Texas League. Game time on Monday will be a special Memorial Day start time of 1:05pm.
