College Park Skyhawks News Release

COLLEGE PARK, GA-The College Park Skyhawks, the official G League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks, joined College Park Elementary for 'Read Across America Day' on March 2.

"We came out here today to inspire students to keep reading," said Skyhawks forward Charlie Brown, Jr., who read to two different classes. "Being in the position that we are as basketball players, we can motivate them. The students look up to us and it's our job to be role models."

Earlier in the week, members of the Skyhawks staff delivered and sorted books in preparation for 'Read Across America Day.' The team collected more than 500 books to donate to the K-5 school through a book drive. College Park Elementary set a goal to have every student leave with three books for their reading level.

Before Brown, Jr. read to the classes, he helped the students select the books they would take home.

"This is the second year we've done the book giveaway on 'Read Across America Day,'" said Sanchea Simmons-Harris, the Parent Liaison at College Park Elementary. "We wanted each student to go home with three books. The students are thrilled they get to have something of their own."

A Title 1 school, College Park Elementary focuses on raising student's test scores in literacy and arithmetic.

The Skyhawks hit the road for three games before returning home to take on the Memphis Hustle on Mar. 13 for Heroes Night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7p.m. at the Gateway Center Arena @ College Park.
