Colina's Strong Start All for Naught

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Edwar Colina tallied a career-high 10 strikeouts in a quality start Monday for the Cedar Rapids Kernels, but Chad Donato and the Quad Cities River Bandits earned a 3-0 win at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Monday's contest was Cedar Rapids' second consecutive shutout loss and its third such defeat in the past four days.

Donato (3-0) picked up his third victory in a row for Quad Cities (28-22, 68-52) after tossing a personal-best seven scoreless innings. He retired 14 consecutive batters in one stretch while carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Donato yielded just two hits and one walk, and he only allowed one runner to reach scoring position.

Colina (6-4) took the loss despite posting double-digit strikeouts for the first time with Cedar Rapids (31-19, 63-56). Colina notched his fifth quality start in a row and gave up just one run, two hits, and two walks over seven innings pitched.

Cesar Salazar, who caught the combined shutout, gave the River Bandits a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning. Salazar collected his first professional home run by hitting a solo shot over the right-field wall.

A pair of two-out runs during the ninth stretched Quad Cities' edge to 3-0. Marty Costes produced an RBI single that drove in Salazar, and Jonathan Lacroix followed with a run-scoring triple.

Tanner Duncan fired two scoreless innings of relief to record the save and secure the River Bandits' Midwest League-leading 15th shutout victory. Duncan stranded the potential game-tying and go-ahead runs in the eighth and kept another runner on the bases within the ninth.

This series between Cedar Rapids and Quad Cities ends Tuesday with first pitch at 6:35 p.m., and Kernels left-hander Tyler Watson (4-5, 4.66) is scheduled to face River Bandits right-hander Bryan Abreu (3-0, 0.44).
