Atlantic City Surf News Release

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (July 7, 2003) – Michael Coleman crushed two homers and drove in four runs to power the Newark Bears over the Atlantic City Surf, 6-5, Monday afternoon at the Sandcastle.

After Pete Maestrales and Paul Esposito singled to start off the first inning, Coleman stepped up and roped a Travis Thompson offering over the left field fence to give Newark an early 3-0 lead.

Newark would tag on two more runs before Coleman struck again with a solo homer in the fifth inning.

Chad Gambill had a two-run homer for the Surf in the fourth inning, but it was all the offense the Surf could muster against Bears starter Matt Wagner.

Wagner (7-3) tossed seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking none.

Jorge Meran had a solo home run for Atlantic City in the eighth inning and Jose Velazquez hit a two-run double in the ninth to bring the Surf within one run.

Newark reliever Hut Smith came in and got pinch hitter Juan Thomas to groundout to end the threat and the ballgame.

With the loss the Surf finish the first half with a 30-33 mark, while the Bears finish at 32-31.

ON DECK: Third baseman Brandon Jackson, second baseman Raul Marval and pitchers Andy Zwirchitz and Randi Mallard will represent the Atlantic City Surf on July 9 at the 2003 Atlantic League All-Star Game in Nashua, N.H. The Surf return to action on Friday, July 11 at Newark.
