Black Bears Stop Rolling Rox

July 7, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Berkshire Black Bears News Release

Manny Crespo ended the dramatic game tonight at Wahconah Park, stopping the Black Bear's six-game losing streak, 4-3 against the Brockton Rox.

Leading 1-0, Brockton catcher, Melvin Rosario, hit an RBI single with Mike Torres on second base in the 6th inning, giving Brockton a 2-0 edge. The Rox offense added one run in the 8th inning, making the score 3-0. Left-handed starter Chad Ward shut out the Black Bears' offense, allowing only one hit over seven scoreless innings. Howwever, Berkshire's bats awoke in the bottom of the 8th, as they faced reliever Fontella Jones. Pete Paciorek reached on an error by third baseman Jake Daubert, then left-fielder Manny Crespo hit a crushing RBI triple to the right-center field gap, scoring Paciorek from first. Brady Williams followed with a single to center (scoring Crespo from third), advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mark Burnett, and scored when Chris Briones singled to right field, tying the game. In the 9th inning, Shane Hopper started the final rally with a single to left. Ryan Jones followed with a seeing-eye single to right, moving Hopper to third. The Rox then walked Pete Paciorek intentionally, bringing Crespo back to the plate. Manny, who struck out to end an unsuccessful 9th inning rally attempt against New Jersey on Sunday afternoon, hit an 2-2 pitch to center, scoring Hopper and ending the game.

Black Bears starter, Tony Harden, gave up three runs, two earned and allowed six hits with two strikeouts over 7 and 2/3 innings. Shane Waroff picked up his third win of the year, getting the last out of the 8th and throwing a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning. Brockton closer, Conor Brooks (0-2), was the losing pitcher, failing to record an out in the final frame. With the loss Brockton now falls to 1.5 games behind North Shore with just 2 games left in the first halfs.
