NEW BRITAIN, CT - Mark Cohoon allowed just one hit through his first six innings and the Binghamton Mets held on to defeat the New Britain Rock Cats 4-3 Tuesday night at New Britain Stadium.
Cohoon (5-7) matched a season-high by navigating through 7.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. The southpaw faced just two over the minimum through his first six innings. Chris Colabello collected the only hit, a line drive single to center.
After scratching out just one runner in the first four innings, the B-Mets finally rallied against starter Blake Martin (3-4) in the fifth. After loading the bases with two singles and a hit batsman, Wilfredo Tovar banged a three-run double off the left field wall, raising his average with runners in scoring position to .500 (12-for-24).
The Rock Cats broke through against Cohoon in the seventh. Deibinson Romero doubled down the third base line with two outs and Nate Hanson brought him home with a single through the hole on the left side.
Binghamton stretched the lead back to three in the eighth against reliever Jose Gonzalez. Eric Campbell crushed a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for his second homer in as many games, giving the B-Mets a 4-1 advantage.
The lead nearly disappeared in the eighth. Shawn Roof led off with a double and Aaron Hicks ended Cohoon's night by doubling to left. With one out, Brad Holt entered and immediately allowed a two-run double to Joe Benson, cutting the lead to one.
With Benson representing the tying run, Oswaldo Navarro lifted a long fly ball to right center. Pedro Zapata tracked the ball to the warning track, but failed to make the catch as he bounced into the wall. Benson, forced to hold at second, only advanced to third on the double.
The play proved pivotal as Holt retired the next two hitters to preserve the lead. Robert Carson shut the door in the ninth, fanning Roof to secure his ninth save of the season.
The B-Mets (48-54) look for their first road series sweep Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 PM. RHP Zack Wheeler takes the hill against RHP B.J. Hermsen. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 11:50 AM on ESPN 1360 WYOS.
