Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - Tony Cogan allowed only five hits and fired his second complete game shutout of the season as the Gary SouthShore RailCats avoided a sweep with a 6-0 blanking of the Schaumburg Flyers Thursday night at a chilly U. S. Steel Yard.
Cogan (8-7) made his last start of the regular season a memorable one, dominating a Flyers team that had won the first two games of the series. The veteran left-hander was in trouble only once, after Schaumburg got runners to second and third with one out in the third inning, but Mike Rohde caught Travis Brown in a rundown between third and home on a Victor Ferrante grounder and Cogan got out of the inning unscathed. After a Felix Jose one out single in the fourth, Cogan retired 15 straight men before a Ferrante single in the ninth, and both hitters were erased on double plays, meaning Cogan faced the minimum three hitters each of the last six innings.
Cogan finished Thursday with seven strikeouts to up his season total to 105, the fifth-most in a season in club history, matching Josh Habel in 2007. Cogan also now leads the Northern League in strikeouts by four over Kansas City's Ryan Knippschild, with Cogan not scheduled to make another start before the playoffs begin next week. Cogan's shutout Thursday was not only his second of the season but also the second of his professional career, following his first July 14 at U. S. Steel Yard against Kansas City.
The RailCats did most of their offensive damage without swinging the bats, matching a franchise single-game record by drawing 13 walks, including three with the bases loaded. Rob Marconi's bases loaded walk in the second got the scoring started before Steve Haake drove in two with a third inning double. Haake had the first two RailCats hits of the night and later added a run-scoring walk, finishing 2-for-3 with two walks and three RBI. Marconi had the only other RBI hit in the game, a single in the seventh inning.
With rain approaching the ballpark all night, Schaumburg scratched scheduled starter Ryan Gehring in favor of reliever Kris Jiggits (1-2) who worked the first two innings plus and was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on one hit and four walks. Four more Schaumburg relievers followed and each man walked at least one, including Joseph Campbell who surrendered four free passes in 2.1 innings.
All nine RailCats starters reached base as the 'Cats needed only seven hits to score their six runs. Haake, Marconi, Rohde and Jay Pecci all walked twice as the RailCats tied a walks record first set June 27, 2008 at Schaumburg. The RailCats had drawn only one walk each of the first two games of the series.
The first-place RailCats (54-38) stay at home to close out the regular season with four games against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (52-39) starting Friday night at 7 p.m. It's a Fireworks Friday night at the ballpark, with a great postgame fireworks show sponsored by First Midwest Bank and The Post-Tribune.
The 'Cats will give the start Friday to right-hander Garret Holleran (4-2, 3.61 ERA) opposite Fargo-Moorhead's Garry Bakker (7-6, 6.30 ERA). The game will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
Notes: Cogan went 4-0 in four starts against Schaumburg this year, allowing just one unearned run and 17 hits over 33.0 innings, compiling 19 strikeouts ... Cogan has thrown 150.0 innings this year, becoming just the fourth RailCats pitcher to ever do so, joining Habel (2007, 155.0), Jason Shelley (2006, 153.2) and Jamie Bennett (2005, 150.0) ... coupled with a Fargo loss Thursday, the RailCats are now one game ahead of second place Winnipeg and 1.5 games up on the RedHawks with four games left in the regular season.
