Schaumburg Flyers News Release

GARY - Tony Cogan went the distance in a shutout victory, while Flyers pitchers combined for a season-high 13 walks as Gary won the final regular season matchup between the two teams 6-0.

With Kansas City's win over Fargo-Moorhead earlier in the day, the Flyers now sit a precarious three games out of the playoffs with four regular season games to go.

Rain was forecasted throughout the entire game, leading the Flyers to replace starter Ryan Gehring with Kris Jiggits, who made his first professional start. It began with a bang, as Jiggits struck out the side in the first inning, and got his first four outs by way of the swinging strikeout.

The trouble began with the walks in the second. Catcher's interference was called on Richard Mercado in the second to continue the inning, erasing a groundout to second by Anthony Esquer and loading the bases. Rob Marconi would walk in the first run of the game immediately after, and Gary had a 1-0 lead.

Two more walks would chase Jiggits (1-2) in the third, and both would come into score on Steve Haake's double off of Josh Giles to make the advantage 3-0 for Gary.

Giles would leave the game at the start of the fourth inning with an undisclosed injury, prompting Joe Campbell to relieve Giles completely cold off the bullpen bench. The walks plagued Flyers pitchers all game, as two more runs would score on bases loaded walks in the fourth.

The 5-0 lead was more than enough for Cogan (8-7), who cruised to a complete game win. He allowed a leadoff single to Felix Jose in the fourth, and then went into shutdown mode from there. He proceeded to set down the next 15 Flyers batters in order, not allowing another base runner until Victor Ferrante's ninth inning single.

Marconi would add another run on an RBI single in the eighth off of Jim Popp, arriving at the 6-0 final. Cogan struck out seven, walked one, and allowed only five hits in his last regular season appearance before game one of the playoffs next week.

After this series win over Gary, the Flyers travel to Winnipeg to close out the regular season, pushing Ryan Gehring (2-1, 3.86) to tomorrow, where he'll face Bear Bay (8-3, 3.60).
