Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Terance Marin struck out a career-high 10 batters in his return to Winston-Salem, and Jason Coats smacked two homers in the Dash's 5-1 win over the Salem Red Sox in front of 5,062 fans at BB&T Ballpark on Friday night.
Marin (1-0), who was released by the White Sox on April 9 and re-signed with the organization on Thursday, tossed a career-high seven innings, allowing just one run and five hits. After two ineffective appearances with the Dash, the 24-year-old pitched with independent league Evansville during the last two months to regain his form, going 4-1 with a 2.05 ERA before coming back to Winston-Salem.
The Dash (2-0, 32-39) received most of their offense from Coats, who hit a two-run home run in the first inning against Red Sox starter Corey Littrell (3-4) to stake Winston-Salem to a 2-0 lead in the wire-to-wire win. The Texas native went deep again in the sixth for his 12th dinger of the season, overtaking Courtney Hawkins for the team lead while moving into sole possession of second place in the Carolina League.
Friday marked Coats' second multi-homer game of the season and the second for the Dash in as many days, with Omar Narvaez slugging two in Thursday's win over the Red Sox.
Salem (0-2, 33-36) mustered its only offense against Marin in the third inning. Jordan Weems doubled to lead off the frame and later scored on Reed Gragnani's single to left field to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Winston-Salem padded its lead in the bottom of the eighth. With the Dash in front 3-1, Hawkins led off the inning with a triple to the right-center field gap and raced home on a wild pitch from Salem reliever Kyle Martin. With two outs, Keon Barnum legged out an infield single and rounded the bases on Grant Buckner's triple to the left-center field gap, extending the Dash advantage to 5-1.
Kyle Hansen and Braulio Ortiz followed Marin's stellar outing with scoreless appearances in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to preserve Winston-Salem's second straight victory over Salem.
The Dash will try to sweep the three-game series against the Red Sox on Saturday night. Winston-Salem will send right-hander Frank Montas (3-0, 1.76 ERA) to the mound, while Salem counters with righty Joe Gunkel (first High-A start). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. For tickets, go to wsdash.com or call (336) 714-2287.
If you can't make it to BB&T Ballpark, you can follow the telecast live on My 48 in the Winston-Salem area, beginning at 7. You can also catch the action on wsdash.com/broadcast, starting with the Pregame Dash at 6:45.
