Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD -The Frederick Keys scored seven runs over their final three at-bats, while Tucker Nathans landed the decisive blow, as the orange and black defeated the Carolina Mudcats 8-6 in 10 innings on Friday night at Five County Stadium. It was the club's fourth extra-inning victory of the campaign, and Frederick's second at Carolina. That sets up a Saturday rubber game, where the Keys will be in search of their fourth straight series win.

Carolina plated three runs in the bottom of the first off Keys right-hander Mark Blackmar. Todd Hankins reach on a leadoff single and stole second before scoring on an RBI base hit by Jeremy Lucas. Joe Sever followed with an RBI single which brought around Yandy Diaz, while a third RBI single by Jerrud Sabourin made it 3-0 Carolina.

In the third, the Mudcats added an additional score on a groundball to the right side by Lucas. However, that was the final tally Blackmar allowed. Completing six stanzas, the righty surrendered four runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out three, while the six innings equaled the Texan's season-high.

Frederick cracked the scoreboard in the sixth against Mudcats starter Adam Plutko. With one out, Sammie Starr tripled to right-center and came home on a sacrifice fly by Mike Yastrzemski. The only run Plutko allowed, the former UCLA standout turned in his second straight quality start, going six innings and scattering just three hits. The righty punched out six and did not walk a batter.

In the eighth, the orange and black pulled even. With one out, Brenden Webb and Pedro Perez singled, to put a pair on-base against Mudcats righty Josh Martin. Later, both men came home on a two-run single by Starr. Yastrzemski followed with his second sac-fly of the game to make it 4-4.

Carolina regained the lead in the home-half of the inning on four walks and a balk by Matt Hobgood, but the Keys battled back thanks to a solo home run by Michael Burgess and a single by Zane Chavez which brought home Jason Esposito from second.

Matt Price negotiated his way around runners at second and third in the ninth to send the game to extra-innings. In the 10th, Yastrzemski singled and stole second while Benny Suarez intentionally walked Burgess with one out. Both runners advanced 90 feet thanks on a flyball to center, setting up Tucker Nathans who slashed a single up the middle to put Frederick on top 8-6.

Price (3-4) closed the door in the bottom of the 10th to cap-off the 8-6 triumph. The right-hander earned his third victory of the campaign working two scoreless innings. Suarez (1-2) was tagged with the loss giving up two runs on two hits in the ninth.
