RHP Terance Marin (0-0, 36.00 ERA) vs. LHP Corey Littrell (3-3, 4.50 ERA)
7 p.m. - BB&T Ballpark (Winston-Salem, N.C.) Game #71 (Home Game #36)
DASH OPEN SECOND HALF WITH ROUT Winston-Salem smacked a season-high four home runs in its 12-4 thumping of the Salem Red Sox in the lid-lifter of the second half on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark. Tim Anderson sailed the first pitch of the opening frame beyond the boards in left, while fellow All-Star Courtney Hawkins clubbed a two-run bomb in the fourth. However, the star of the show was newcomer Omar Narvaez, who hit a pair of home runs in his Dash debut. He launched a three-run blast in the third and a solo shot in the seventh. On the mound, Tony Bucciferro did not surrender an earned run over six innings for his ninth quality start and fifth victory of 2014.
NO NARVAEZ IN HIS DEBUT Narvaez became the second Winston-Salem hitter this season to record a multi-homer game. He joined Jason Coats, who went deep twice in an 8-7 win over Carolina on June 8. Prior to Thursday's breakout game, Narvaez had only hit two home runs in his Minor League career (260 games before Thursday). The Venezuela native had not mustered a home run since August 20, 2012, while with the Princeton Rays.
FOUR BAGGER Winston-Salem mustered a season-high four home runs, which marks the first time the club had accomplished that feat since July 8, 2013, in a 12-9 win over Potomac. The Dash have not gone yard more than four times since a five-dinger effort at Potomac on April 30, 2012. Thanks to this surge, the Dash have jumped into third place in the Carolina League with 42 home runs, one shy of Frederick for second. Myrtle Beach leads the way with 59. The Dash led the CL in homers from 2010-13.
STARTING HOT The Dash had dropped their previous five first- or second-half openers prior to Thursday's dominant victory over Salem. The Dash also enjoy a share of first place and have won seven of their last 10 games for the first time in 2014.
MARIN RETURNS Less than three months after releasing him, the White Sox have once again signed right-hander Terance Marin, who will start for Winston-Salem in this middle match. Marin appeared in two games with the Dash in April, and he struggled (1.0 IP/10 R/4 ER). Thus, the White Sox let him go, and the Newman, Calif., native latched on with independent Evansville, where he went 4-1 with a 2.05 earned run average in six starts. In three of those appearances, Marin took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning. Friday will mark Marin's eighth Minor League start.
HIGH QUALITY BUCCIFERRO Thursday starter and victor Tony Bucciferro earned his team-leading ninth quality start in his 14th outing of 2014. Despite this strong resume, the Dash are just 6-8 when Bucciferro starts. As a group, Winston starters have shined as of late. In its last 29 games, the Dash logged 16 quality starts after only 12 in their first 41 outings. The Dash are third in the CL with a 3.66 team ERA.
THE BIGGEST ISSUE With three more errors Thursday, the Dash added to their CL-leading total of 106 defensive miscues, which are good for second in all of Minor League Baseball. These blunders have resulted in 96 unearned runs, the most in the Minor Leagues. The closest competitor in this category is Fort Wayne (Low-A, San Diego), who lead the Minors in errors (129).
DASH DOTS Winston-Salem logged its most lopsided win of the season on Thursday...It was the biggest victory for the Dash since a 13-2 obliteration of Frederick on July 23, 2013, at BB&T Ballpark... The Dash's offense went 7-for-8 with men in scoring position, while six starters registered multi-hit games...Tim Anderson came up with his team-leading 26th multi-hit effort and his eighth showing of three or more hits...No other Winston hitter has more than three games with three-plus knocks.
